Practice Time - Pee Wee Football Defense

If defense wins championships, how come so many youth football teams do not spend much time on team defense? I watch year after year as teams ignore working on team defense except when they scrimmage.

Much like the last post, I think we need to clarify what we mean when we ask this question. Not only overall defense, but individual and team defense needs to be practiced.

Just like my answer under the offensive question, the defensive side of the ball directly iNFLuences many of the daily routine skills and drills. Every single stretch and exercise helps your defense in one way or another.

The way we run, our agility through the pads are based on a good linebacker stance. We have the players learn to shuffle their feet and keep their heads up so they can see the play develop.

We work on form tackling the pads every day. 90% of my practices will contain some form of either the Angle Tackle Drill or Open Field Tackling.

When the season is underway and we have scouting reports to go on, we will spend extensive time running a "scout offense" against the defense teaching all of our upcoming opponents tendencies and special plays.

As a general rule, at least 70-80% of our practice time is going over our defensive gameplan or working on some defensive skill or concept.

Teaching the players to trust each other and not to try to make every play can be a challenge with the little kids. It is second nature for the kids to just run after the ball carrier and try to make the tackle.

It takes time for the players to understand that their individual responsibilities are most important in a team setting. You cannot roam over the field and have a successful defense if the individual assignments are being ignored.

Outside containment is the hardest responsibility to teach the young players. When the plays appears to be heading the other way, it takes great discipline to stay home.

I am always on the lookout, when scouting an opponent, for the players who do not stay home. I know I can run reverse and counter plays for big yardage against him.

In conclusion, take the time in practice to make certain the players are well schooled in the defensive scheme you have choosen to use this year. If your opponent cannot score, they cannot win.

Wisconsin Badgers - Wisconsin's Pride - The Wisconsin Badgers Football Team

The Wisconsin Badgers football team is the University of Wisconsin-Madison's college football program. The Badgers compete at the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, and is a member of the Big 10 Conference. Their home games are played at the Camp Randall Stadium. They have a win-loss-tie record of 575-451-53 and a winning percentage of 53%. The name of the team is a reference to Wisconsin state's early history. Sometime in the early 19thcentury prospectors came to Wisconsin to look for minerals, particularly lead. During winter, the miners had to seek shelter inside tunnels that were burrowed in the hillsides, and thus lived like badgers. Their territory came to be known as the "Badger State." Currently, as of 2008, the Badgers head coach is Breat Bielema, their offensive coordinator is Paul Chryst, and their defensive coordinator is Dave Doeren.

Member of the Big 10

The Big 10 is one of the major conferences in college football and is the oldest Division I college athletic conference in the country. It has a total of eleven members including the Badgers with teams that are primarily located in the Midwestern part of the U.S. It includes Pennsylvania in the East and stretches from Iowa and Minnesota in the west. Nine of the eleven conference schools in the Big 10 are considered to be Public Ivy Leagues, including the University of Wisconsin. It enjoys the prestige of both athletic and academic excellence. The conference competes in the NCAA Division I. The Big 10 member teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly Division I-A-the highest level of the NCAA competition. The member schools also are members of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, an educational consortium. Despite the name Big 10, there are 11 members, with the Penn State joining in 1990. The Big 10 center is located in La Porte County, Indiana.

Badgers Various Incarnations

Throughout the years, various forms of badgers have represented the team as the school mascot. The current mascot is named Bucky, wearing the team's colors of cardinal and white in a letter sweater. This mascot was first drawn by artist Art Evans in 1940. The badger mascot went by many names such as Buddy, Benny, Bobby, Bernie, and Bouncey. It was Art Lentz, then publicity director for the athletics department who brought the mascot to life. The badger mascot of yesteryears was known to be rowdy and out-of-control-since it was a real live badger! The badger was known to run amok and frighten fans and players alike. It was decided for everyone's safety that the badger was better off in the Madison Zoo and did not belong in the school or in football games. The badger was then replaced by a tamer but still no-badger, small raccoon aptly named Regdab (which was badger spelled backwards) passed off as a badger in a raccoon coat. In 1949, Connie Conrad, an art student in the university, made a badger head molded from papier-mâché. Cheerleader and gymnast, Bill Sagal, wore the outfit during a homecoming game. A contest was held to name the mascot and the winning name was "Bucky," which pushed the football team to "buck right through that line."

Looking For the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders?

The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders are part of a tradition in American Football that people from other countries find hard to understand. It is hard for outsiders to appreciate quite how significant the business of being a cheerleader has become, or how much it integrates with business sponsorship which helps to pay some of the huge bills of NFL franchises.

Cheerleading has been a part of American sports for over a century now, and football and basketball have always been at the forefront of this. Only in this century has the cheerleader been integrated into baseball.

The Dallas Cowboys franchise has been part of the NFC now for over 40 years, and the cheerleaders themselves have just celebrated their 35th anniversary. The cheerleaders have become such an institution that they have recently been to the Persian Gulf, as part of an entertainment tour for the military.

They have also been immortalized in a new set of Barbie dolls, as well as the inevitable tour photographs and annual calendar. The trips overseas as part of the USO have been happening for over twenty five years, and this was the 63rd trip. The cheerleaders performed a musical show called "America and Her Music", as well as mixing with the troops and posing for pictures.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have been producing their annual calendar every year since their inception, and in the last two years it has been extended to cover 16 months, starting in September to cover the football season.

But wait, there's more...

The cheerleaders have been down to the Riviera Maya in Mexico to shoot the calendar, which was unveiled to the eager waiting world right on midfield at Texas Stadium. The staff at the cheerleaders had been looking at thousands of potential pictures during months of editing, and the final choices came as a great surprise to many who finally made the cut, and had their pictures included in the calendar.

The cheerleaders also have an annual competition. The bye weekend in the middle of the season gave many of the Cowboys' players, coaches an administrators a well-earned rest, but not the cheerleaders. The cheerleaders take part in a two day competition, which also gives them a chance to interact with the fans, and provide a chance for other dance groups within the city to become involved.

For many of people the Cowboys' competition is the highlight of the year. Some of the better groups in the competition even get to appear in the Cowboys' half time show during their Christmas game on December 16th.

This is the sort of event that the American sports do so well, liaising with the fan base and customers of the future. Anyone who was there will go away with a very positive impression of the organization, and of the professionalism and dedication of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

Keep Your Hands in Football Hand Warmers

Ask any sports nut you can find in and out of your neighborhood, and they will all shake their heads in unison just to say that nobody in their right minds would want to miss football season, be it in high school, college or the NFL. The Super Bowl is an especially exciting time, what with all the shouting, the cheering, and the touchdowns. For many families, Thanksgiving is never complete with the Super Bowl. But the problem with the football season is that it usually begins when the weather is cold. Everybody is huddled up in their thickest sweaters, and breaths start to fog up the air. At times, it can be so cold that you will not feel your numbed fingers already. If you want to enjoy each and every football game you bought tickets for without having to restrain yourself from cheering on because of the cold, then you will have to have football hand warmers.

Today, most jackets are made with front pockets that you can use to put your hands in and keep them warm. But sometimes, even when your hands are inside, the chilly weather gets through and your hands will still feel cold. That is why you need a separate warmer in football hand warmers. These warmers are shaped cylindrically with a hole in the middle so you can put your hands in. While your jacket's front pockets are only made of your jacket's fabric, these hand warmers are more comfortable because they are usually thermally-lined, keeping your hands warm and comfortable throughout the night.

For added warmth, some football hand warmers are made with a hot-pack compartment, that not only prevents your hands from being cold, but makes them feel cozy warm. These warmers are not just for the audience who sit on the bleachers. For the staff who are on the field, hand warmers can come in handy as well. We all know that when the body is uncomfortable, the mind does not function as well as it should be. So, coaches - who do a hell of a job keeping the team working like a greased machine - will make better judgments when they do not need to worry about not being comfortable, and the least one can do is give him warmers. Football players who are waiting on the bench should also use football hand warmers, so when it is their time to have a go on the field, their hand muscles are warm enough to play well.

Even cheerleaders can benefit from using these warmers. We always see cheerleaders in their short skirts and sexy outfits, but nobody bothers to think that they just might be a little too chilly standing outside with only their cheerleading outfits on. Supplying them with portable hand warmer can make them last long enough until the game ends to cheer their teams on. Hand warmers can come in handy during winter when you cannot afford to have your hands frozen.

The Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor- A Tribute To Its Legends

The NFL Dallas Cowboys have been dubbed "America's Team". Their consistent high performance, over a span of more than 30 years, has made the team a fan favorite not only in the state of Texas and the United States but internationally, as well. Along with their great success on the field, the Dallas Cowboys are just as successful off the field and are considered one of the most valuable sports teams in North America. At the heart of the Cowboys great success is their play on and off the field, and the individuals who have contributed to that play.

Through its franchise history, the Dallas Cowboys have had a number of all-stars whose skills and achievements have contributed to Dallas Cowboys history. Endless players have donned the single star and blue and white jerseys of the Dallas Cowboys and taken to the field at Texas Stadium. As well, on the sidelines and behind the scenes many individuals have contributed to the great success of Cowboys football. Some of these individuals, whether it is their achievements on or off the field, have become legends of the Dallas Cowboys and legends of the game.

To honor their legends the Dallas Cowboys created the Ring of Honor. Individuals, who have made outstanding contributions to the Dallas Cowboys organization, whether they are former players, coaches or club officials, are honored in a ring around Texas Stadium, in Irving Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys since 1971. Ring of Honor inductees are chosen by a Committee of One. Tex Schramm, originator, former president-general manager was the first committee of one and placed a high value not only on the talent but also the character of his choices. Since 1989 Ring of Honor decisions have rested with owner Jerry Jones.

November 23, 1975, designated Bob Lilly day in Dallas, was the beginning of the Ring of Honor and what was considered to be the first Dallas Cowboys reunion. During half time Bob Lilly's name and jersey number were unveiled beneath the press box at Texas Stadium. Lilly, who after a 14 year career had retired from the NFL in July 1975, donned his Cowboy uniform once more and graciously accepted the honor along with a number of other gifts. Present at the historical event were Cowboys owner Clint Murchison, president-general manager Tex Schramm and Head Coach Tom Landry. As the first inductee, Lilly has had the added distinction of returning to present each new member in the Ring of Honor.

Being a Ring of Honor inductee is a coveted distinction that has truly been bestowed upon only the most deserving, just as its creator Tex Schramm had envisioned. Schramm himself was selected to the Ring of Honor, posthumously, in October 2003 a few months after his passing. An unprecedented three former Cowboys all-stars were simultaneously inducted into the Ring of Honor in September 2005. Part of three 1990s Super Bowl Championship Cowboys teams and known as the "The Triplets", Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith fittingly took their place in the Ring of Honor during half time ceremonies on Monday Night Football.

Today there are 17 inductees in the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. Inductees include: Bob Lilly, Don Meredity, Don Perkins, Chuck Howley, Mel Renfro, Roger Staubach, Lee Roy Jordan, Tom Landry, Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Bob Hayes, Tex Schramm, Cliff Harrus, Rayfield White, Troy Aikman, Michael Irving, and Emmitt Smith.

Dallas Cowboys history is rich and storied. All of the inductees into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor have contributed to the team and its character. Each one of them has left a legacy and become a legend of America's Team and the National Football League.

Coaching Youth Football - Homecoming Or Rally Night For Youth Football

I hate homecoming games for youth football. My record with the last five teams I have coached is 1-4. What is the purpose of a "homecoming"? I believe it is for prior players and families to come back and support the team. What a bunch of hogwash! I have never seen any returning players come back to watch a game because it was a homecoming game. The other players will come back if they have a sibling playing on your youth football team.

The truth is the players get completely distracted. They want to screw around, paint their faces and pig out on junk food. Some parents want to have parties before and after the game. A double dose of BS as far as I am concerned.

Once again, we live in a democracy so I need to deal with youth football homecoming. I have found it best to use that Team Mom and depending on how she and the other parents feel about it let them have at it. I ask that the festivities be held after the game. Let Team Mom put together a committee and make homecoming as big as they want. I usually leave after the game to go scout. Some of my assistants have enjoyed hanging out after the game for the social event. I know it is for the kids so I try to keep a low profile regarding homecoming. You will want to check with your league as to what the require you to do. Make sure the Team Mom coordinates with the cheerleaders since they live and die for this day. Some years the cheerleaders have made a banner for the kids to run through. This really keeps the focus in check before the game (joke).

One youth football league I coached for had a rally night. I thought this was a good idea. They had the Youth football Rally Night before the first game. This is brilliant since all teams are undefeated at this point and optimism is at the highest level.

All the youth football teams would line up and each player had his name announced. The player would run through a large iNFLatable helmet. This helmet came from a local high school. Each player gets his moment in the sun by running through this helmet. I believe they even used a fog machine so the players ran through a cloud of smoke. They had one of the families donate hamburgers and hot dogs. All food was cooked and given to the players free. The league bought Gatorade which was given free too the players.

This was well run and fast. There was no youth football game following the event so the kids were able to be as crazy as they wanted to be.

The Allure of Texas High School Football

Even if you've never been to a Texas high school football game, you probably know that these games and the fans who follow them are somewhat different than other high school football games and fans. In Texas, football isn't a sport and it isn't an extra-curricular activity. No, it's almost been elevated to the level of a religion. To say that Texas high school football fans are passionate about the spot would be an understatement; a huge understatement.

Friday Night Lights may have been first a popular book and then a film but it all started with the true story of one season with the Odessa Permian Panthers. Hollywood didn't need to pump up the real life story of this Texas high school team with fabrication; the real story was already enough of a legend to carry it all the way to the silver screen.

If you think you know high school football, you haven't seen anything until you've seen it from the Lone Star State. Even the smaller schools really get involved. It's not uncommon to see entire caravans traveling the Texas highways on Friday nights; the football team, drill team, cheerleaders, marching band and sponsor. All of that can easily require a dozen buses or so. And that's not even including the hordes of parents and fans that travel right along with them. In relatively few other events will you see devoted fans travel hundreds of miles for a playoff game; and keep in mind that in Texas that's entirely possible. The border from east to west stretches almost one thousand miles.

So, what is it exactly about Texas high school football in particular that seems to appeal to such a mass audience? While there may be no definitive answer for that question, there is definitely one certainty: nothing else on earth has quite the same intensity and passion to it. You can feel it reverberating in the air when you step into any high school football stadium throughout the state.

High school football fans in Texas are not just passionate about football; they live it and breathe it. On any given Friday night during football season in Texas you're likely to see just about as much violence in the stands as you are on the turf if one fan happens to aggravate another.

And that's not even mentioning the rivalry that can take place between teams in Texas. While it's not uncommon at all for neighboring towns throughout the country to form high school football rivalries, Texans take it to a whole new level. In many cases, extra policeman have to be called out during big rival games just to keep the peace among the crowd. In a few instances, some towns had to stop even playing one another at all because of the violence that ensued between fans in the stands and on the sidelines during rival games.

The exact allure of Texas high school football may be somewhat difficult to describe, but one thing is certain: you feel it when you experience it.

If the rest of the world loves soccer, Texans love football.

Emmitt Smith - From Star Running Back to Dancing Champ

It's been nearly two decades since Emmitt Smith played his first game at Texas Stadium. Since 1990, the star player has improved his performance quality dramatically and has discovered another talent he had been hiding; dancing! Now he is widely recognized for both of his impressive abilities. To some he may be the guy who made the Tango look manly on the third season of Dancing with the Stars, which he ultimately won. To most, he may be the greatest running back to ever grace the football field. Regardless of whether or not the teams he played for are your preferred teams, there is absolutely no denying that Emmitt Smith is an irreplaceable player. Although, he was once deemed to be too slow and too small to succeed in the National Football League, he has been a dominant player at every level in the game, from college to national.

Emmitt James Smith III grew up in rural Pensacola, Florida, where he spent his childhood years idolizing famed Chicago Bears Half-Back, Walter Payton. Payton was well-known for holding the record for NFL's all time rushing leader. Ironically, Smith later went on to surpass Payton's outstanding title when playing against the Seattle Seahawks on October 27, 2002; almost three years to the day after Payton's tragic death. In addition to this astounding accomplishment, Smith has many more brag-worthy achievements on his resumé. In 1993, he was declared the only running back in history to have won a Super Bowl championship, as well as being awarded the NFL rushing crown, NFL Most Valuable Player award, and the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award in the same season.

"I'm chasing after legends... after guys who made history," Emmitt Smith once told Sports Illustrated in the dawn of his professional career. When my career is over, I want to have the new kids, the new [running] backs say, 'Boy, we have to chase a legend to be the best.' And they'll mean Emmitt Smith." If his goal was to be a legend, he certainly has accomplished that. Aside from all of his other achievements, Smith was also inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor on September 19, 2005. In 2010, he will additionally become eligible to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame and it is widely expected that he will be initiated on his first attempt. Smith was also enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame on July 21, 2007 for his profound play at the University of Florida.

All players eventually come to a time where they decide to take a rest from the game. On February 3, 2005, Emmitt Smith proudly walked out onto the press conference stage and retired from the NFL after 14 years of impressive, intense playing. Smith spent his final two seasons playing as an Arizona Cardinal. However, in an extraordinary tribute to Smith's prolific career as a Dallas Cowboy, team owner Jerry Jones signed him to a one-day, no-money contract allowing Smith to finalize his career where he belonged and will be remembered fondly; Dallas.

Show Your True Colors! Sports Fan-Wear Guide

Get Your Sports Gear; Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Kansas, Washington and Minnesota; the list goes on. Every logo, color, state, team, size and shape is out there. Of course, I'm talking about sports gear.

You can find hats, shoes, jerseys, caps, accessories, tee shirts and more as near as your local mall, sports shop or even the internet. Wearing sports apparel is not a new concept but it is gaining ground. Even the smaller and lesser known teams are hoping people shop for their goods. Naturally, the big teams always have their fans and those that buy their gear, but the lesser known ones are discovering that they too can sell their products and people will shop for them.

The interest in wearing sports apparel just keeps growing and growing. Sports are big business and so is sports gear. Americans love their teams and there sure are a lot of teams out there. Shop the internet or your local mall and you will probably find gear for teams you haven't even heard of. Sports sells and sports gear is no different. Men and women, young and old normally have at the very least one item of clothing that is sports related. MLB, NBA, NCAA, NHL, and NFL; they all have their licensed gear out in the shops ready for fans to enjoy.

Everyone loves sports these days and even if they don't, they probably still have some sports apparel. We love the teams; we love the colors, the spirit and everything else about it. Many of the items are the same, but if you shop around you can find some unique sports gear and accessories. It's nice to be a part of the crowd and have the same shirt or cap that everyone else does but it's even better to be able to stand out and still show team spirit from time to time. No problem; you can even find Sox tee-shirts (and just about any other team) in pink or light blue or many other colors. What's nice about these is that they are not worn by everyone but yet are trendy.

Women's sports wear is gaining popularity. Thankfully there are more shops that are catering to the buying trends of women sports lovers. Accessories based on sports teams including purses and jewelry are making more of an appearance too. Not only in football and baseball but in gear from the NHL, NCAA and more are offering women more choices in sports gear.

Kids aren't left out either. Even babies have little team cheerleader outfits or jerseys that their parents proudly put on them. Whether you are in Minnesota, Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio or Colorado (or anywhere else for that matter) you can find both local and national sports gear. Online shops are offering more choices too in sports apparel. Some of it is getting down-right creative and fun and not just the same old thing.

No matter what your taste, there is sports gear out there for you.

Importance of Strength to Jump Higher

Want to jump higher, run faster, and increase your explosiveness for sports? If so you must be STRONG!

There has been a vast improvement in the overall speed, size, and power displayed in all sports over the last 10 years. Athletes are by and large bigger, stronger, and faster then their predecessors of yesteryear. For example, the average NBA power forward today is 20-30 pounds heavier than the same forward of 10 years ago along with being faster, stronger, and more explosive. The average NFL running back is also 20-30 pounds heavier and much faster then running backs 10 years ago. Strength training has made the single, most positive contribution to this type of improvement. Witness the performances this year of tennis ace Serena Williams and Giants slugger Barry Bonds. Today strength training iNFLuences every athletic program in the country, no matter what the sport - male or female. Athletes now find it necessary to lift weights and participate in conditioning programs to better prepare themselves for the competitive rigors of the athletic season.

It has been proven that athletic performance depends either directly or indirectly on qualities of muscular strength. The primary function of the 600+ muscles in the body is to contract in order to cause movement in body parts. Only muscle can cause movement. The stronger your muscles and the more forceful the contractions are in relationship to your own bodyweight, the faster you will run, the higher you will jump, the further you will throw, and the harder you will hit. It's that simple! Not to mention, having a basis of muscular strength is important to avoid injury.

For example, there has long been an epidemic of ACL tears with female athletes - basketball, volleyball, and cheerleaders in particular. Although some of this is due to structural differences in comparison to men (wider hip structure) - Studies have also proven that one of the reasons females are susceptible to ACL tears is due to their lack of relative lower body strength.

Maximum strength is the backbone upon which all other strength qualities lie. You'll hear me talk a lot about being fast and the importance of speed, power, reactive ability etc. All of these qualities of strength are very important, but truthfully, unless you have enough raw horsepower in your engine you won't be going anywhere or doing anything in a hurry! In this case you can think of horsepower and maximum strength as being synonymous. While only powerlifters need to maximize and demonstrate maximum strength in competition, all athletes need to develop maximum strength as a foundation for other such as explosive strength, reactive strength, strength endurance, agility, and others. For this reason, absolute muscular strength must first be brought to optimal levels and simultaneously blended into strength that you can use for your sport, or "functional" strength. Maximum strength can be displayed through 2 types of muscular actions:

1) Concentric Strength: the ability to overcome a resistance through muscular contraction, i.e., the muscle shortens as it develops tension. Lifting a weight is an example of concentric strength. 2) Eccentric Strength: displayed when a muscle lengthens as it yields to a resistance. Eccentric strength is normally 30-50% greater than concentric strength, meaning that you can lower significantly more weight in good control than you can actually lift.

Despite the current preoccupation with plyometrics, platform shoes, gimmicks, weighted vests etc, improving basic absolute strength has long been the most efficient way to improve speed, agility, jumping ability, and explosiveness in sports. In fact, Romanian strength & periodization specialist Tudor Bompa suggests that "No visible increments of power or speed-strength (force x velocity) are possible without clear gains in maximal strength." Why is this? Well, if you increase your strength, you also increase the amount of force you can generate. All things being equal the more force you can apply in a movement (each foot contact in a sprint, amount of force you apply when you jump, throw, etc); the faster you'll move, the higher you'll jump, the further you'll throw etc.

To appreciate the importance of muscular strength on the ability to display power and explosive strength, imagine a rocket weighing 1000 pounds, with an engine capable of 1200 pounds of thrust. This rocket has only 200 pounds of reserve force to propel itself. The same rocket, when equipped with an engine rated at 3000 pounds of thrust, will have 2000 pounds of reserve thrust that can be used for propulsion.

Now back to the gym: a 200 pound man capable of squatting 250 pounds for a single rep will have a mere 50 pounds of reserve strength available to propel his body upward during a vertical jump. Contrast this with a 200-pound elite-class powerlifter capable of squatting 600 pounds. Now we've got 400 pounds of strength reserve available, and all things being equal, he will have a vastly superior vertical jump compared to the novice squatter.

Another example is that of the medium distance runner. In order to run 800 meters in 1:45, it is necessary to be able to run a 10.6-10.7 second time in the 100 meters. One needs to possess great strength potential to do this and generally have the ability to execute 3 consecutive standing long jumps covering a total distance of at least 9 meters, for which middle-distance runners usually do not have the strength. Elimination of this weakness is possible only through specialized strength training, which shows a stronger influence on the muscles than distance training, thereby intensifying or "speeding up" their endurance work. As a result, the power and capacity to run a fast 800 meters is improved.

But is there such thing as having too much strength? Well it depends on the person but generally, Yes there is!! Before getting into that lets first examine the type of strength and force required for optimum sports performance.

The maximum amount of force you produce during any given sports movement is called F-max . I think it's fairly obvious that in most sports endeavors requiring explosiveness, quickness, or speed, you'd like your force output to be as high as possible. In any sports movement, the time you have to apply maximum force is so short that it's not possible to get all of your muscles turned on and display maximum strength and force. Not even close! Only powerlifting, where a movement may take many seconds or longer to complete, tests one's maximum strength. NO other sport does because of the time constraint. You have only a fraction of a second usually to exert any given amount of force in any given sports movement. You never quite equal your maximum strength levels in sports movements because the movements are over with so quickly.

So, although strength is very important, also understand that simply working on your maximum strength for years on end is usually NOT the way to become great! In fact it can and will slow you down if carried to the extreme. The coaches of yesteryear were partially right when they wouldn't allow their players to lift for fear that doing so would foul up their "touch"(skill), make them muscle-bound or slow them down. They were right. The reason is that continually hammering maximum strength -- your 1-RM -- will eventually result in muscle being synthesized and bodyweight being added beyond the point where your strength-to-weight ratio is greatest. Added strength, when carried to this extreme, almost invariably means added weight, slower movement speed, inability to achieve positive acceleration let alone greater explosive strength.

Record holding powerlifter and author Fred Hatfield a.k.a. "Dr. Squat" says that former Soviet scientists worshipped the relationship between an athletes maximum strength and the amount of force that athlete could apply in their sporting movement (F-max) and for good cause. They believed that NOTHING should EVER be done to cause an increase in the ratio between F-max and maximum strength. They believed that the DEFINITION of a great athlete was one whose F-max (force applied during a short sports movement) came close to his/her limit strength (force applied in any movement regardless of time). They believed that, in all the world of sport, SPEED is king.

So, this being the case, we must give consideration to the concept of functional strength , or the amount of strength necessary to maximize the strength you can produce in a quick sporting movement (F-max) without causing an increase in the difference between F-max (the amount of force you can produce in a sporting movement) and maximum strength. To do this it helps to pay attention to relative strength, or strength per unit of bodyweight.

Whereas absolute strength refers to strength irrespective of bodyweight, relative strength is a term used to denote an athlete's strength per unit of bodyweight (his or her "pound for pound strength"). So, if two athletes of different bodyweights can squat 275 pounds, they have equal strength for that lift, but the lighter athlete has greater relative, or pound for pound, strength. Athletes who compete in weight-class events depend heavily on relative strength, as do athletes who must overcome their bodyweight to accomplish a motor task (i.e., long jump, sprinting, etc.). Further, sports which have aesthetic requirements (figure skating, gymnastics, etc.) demand the development of strength without a commensurate gain in bodyweight.

So how do you know if your strength to weight ratio is optimal? Simple. If your strength is going up faster then your bodyweight and your performance is improving as well then you're on the right track. You definitely don't need to be afraid of an increase in bodyweight so long as the strength gained from that bodyweight is functional. If one weighs 150 pounds and squats 200 lbs and increases his bodyweight to 175 lbs and improves his squat to 300 lbs his strength:bodyweight ratio has improved considerably! Oftentimes a 10% increase in body-mass will lead to as much of a 30% increase in strength or more!

So how do you know when you've reached a point when you're becoming too strong? Simple. The thing to note is "eventually", but not "immediately", increasing strength and body-mass could result in negative effects on speed, size, and relative strength. Fortunately, you will know of this long before it happens as you will find that an increase in strength fails to yield an increase in sporting performance (speed, jumping ability, etc.) You will also find that the amount of work required to stimulate additional strength gains will begin to interfere with sport-specific work.

To give you an idea on when that point might come realize most elite sprinters routinely squat with weights 2-3 times their bodyweight!

Since strength training targets the neuro-muscular system, strength can be developed through two very different means, by applying stress either to the muscular or to the neural aspect of the system. The former method is usually accomplished through the application of "bodybuilding" methods (repetitions between 6-12 to exhaustion, using continuous tension techniques), and results in strength gains through an increase in muscle size. The latter method employs higher intensity training (repetitions between 1 and 5 using accelerative technique and full recoveries between sets), and increases in strength are the result of the body's improved ability to recruit more of its existing motor unit pool, or increase in neural efficiency.

For optimal strength gains you'll need varying amounts of both. First, maximize the strength per unit of bodyweight until your relative strength is very high. Then you can look to increase muscle size so you have more muscle to tap into for further strength increases.

The Dallas Cowboys Coach

The Dallas Cowboys Coach is one of the most prized jobs in football. Working with a franchise that has money to spend, a proud history, and a large fan base gives the coach the potential to go as far as his talents can take him.

This was not always the case, and a great debt is owed to the exceptional coach who took the Cowboys from humble and unsuccessful beginnings to domination of the NFC throughout the 1970s. When the Dallas franchise was formed back at the start of the 1960s, Tex Schramm brought in Tom Landry as head coach. Landry had been a player in New York, with the Yankees and then the Giants, and also a defensive coordinator with the Giants.

Those first seasons in Dallas were tough, but the management of the franchise, to their eternal credit, stuck with Tom Landry. Landry continued to build the team throughout the 1960s, and in 1966 the work started to pay off, as Dallas enjoyed their first winning season, which then grew into a league record twenty consecutive winning seasons.

By the start of the 1970s, the Cowboys were ready to move up another level. They won the Super Bowl twice under Landry during the 1970s, and won the NFC Championship five times.

As Dallas Cowboys Coach, Tom Landry was responsible for innovations that were to change the way the game of football was played for ever. The "4-3 Defense", now so popular throughout the game, was a Tom Landry development, started in his years with the Giants. The system of having four down linemen, and only three linebackers, gave defenses a new flexibility. Whereas before a lineman had always lined up opposite the center, now the middle linebacker was able to stand two yards deeper. His system was further improved during his time with Dallas, as two of the linemen were moved a yard off the scrimmage line, depending on circumstances.

Although the Dallas fans were incensed when Tom Landry was dismissed by Jerry Jones at the start of 1989, Jones did at least replace him with a coach who was capable of reviving the team's fortunes in a very big way.

Coach Jimmy Johnson took over at a time when the Cowboys' fortunes were at rock bottom, and within three years he had led them to a Super Bowl victory. This was retained the following year. Johnson was in the enviable position of having top draft picks with which to build his team, but he still had to pick the right players, and his record of picking future Hall of Fame players speaks for itself. Although his tenure was short lived, Johnson has certainly proved his right to be considered a great Dallas Cowboys Coach.

Bill Parcells is currently the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

David Archuleta Performs At Ohana Day

David Archuleta performs "A Little Too Not Over You" at Ohana Day at Aloha Stadium on February 7, 2009. My Dad shot the video without me asking him to! Isn't he a great dad? It got cut off in the beginning a bit, but he caught most of the song. Stay tuned afterwards for David posing with NFL cheerleaders.
