College Football Withdrawal - A Guide to Recognizing and Recovering From Football Dependency
College Football's season ending 'hurrah' that is bowl week heralds the conclusion of the 2008 season. For the more balanced among us, this signals the start of a new year and the chance to focus on surviving winter and to enjoy not having to cut the grass. For others, this time of year marks a merciful and justified end to more than four months of yelling, beer swilling, nacho loading and relationship damaging behavior.
2008 was notable for many formerly losing programs. Vanderbilt defeated Boston College 16-14 in the Music City Bowl on New Year's Eve. This was Vanderbilt's first bowl win since the Dwight Eisenhower Presidency and came over #24 Boston College. Not since Howdy Doody ruled Saturdays has Vanderbilt produced a post season victory. Vandy is now able to provide proof that the school indeed has a football program. Coming out of the cold after 53 years will provide enough fuel to keep the Commodore faithful happy through the offseason.
2008 saw many milestones achieved. It also saw some horrific collapses. Several formerly strong programs that expected to win, took a nosedive into the black hole of bowl in ineligibility. The Wolverines of mighty Michigan found out what life has been like for their Big-10 brethren at Indiana this year, as there was no bowl trip to a warm climate to salve the discomfort of a Michigan winter. Several programs that expected to be generating heat in the compost bin, didn't fail to disappoint. Perennial doormats of the west, New Mexico State and Idaho managed to field teams that performed expectedly abysmally. The big surprise this year was former Pac-10 power program Washington. The team smelled like wet dogs as they competed with cross state rival Washington State to solidly anchor the worst group of 2008 football programs.
How do Husky fans survive the offseason? The obligatory firing of the old coach and replacement with poor Steve Sarkisian from USC will provide a few weeks of hope, but in the end, reality will set in just like the Puget Sound fog. The one bright spot is that expectations for Husky football are now set so low, that even a single win over a Division II school would qualify as a step in the right direction. UW is now trying to schedule Western Kentucky and Murray State just as soon as possible. But the purple dogs would be wise to remember Michigan scheduling Appalachian State at home some years ago. The maize and blue's gagging in that game started the program spiraling into the septic tank. But well... if you are UW, there just isn't much further to fall, so you may as well try and outbid Indiana and Nebraska to get Murray State to show up on your field.
How did we as a society get to a point where our daily happiness is dependent on how the alma mater did on the field? This question justifies some exploration as a good chunk of the autumn economy is driven by young, t-shirt clad alumni putting pizza, nachos and beer on their new American Express cards.
College football afternoons call to mind a time of hope and anticipation for university alumni. That time of being young and able to scope out the coeds with impunity is for many, the best and most hopeful time of their young lives. Many alumni get out into the world and before they realize it, find themselves with a mortgage, a wife and two great but loud kids. They wistfully look back on the feeling of exhilaration and optimism when they let themselves believe that Tammy C. from Accounting 101 might really go out with 'em. For young alums the challenge is then to recreate those great feelings of exhilaration and optimism while encumbered by a real job.
University administrators take great advantage of this. Inviting alumni to fund raising events where they can mingle with students, alums and cheerleaders stirs just enough of that old college excitement that alumni are soon parted with significant sums of their money. When this occurs, a dysfunctional bond is created between alum and institution. Winning on the field becomes a validation of that relationship. And validation is important when going home to the wife to explain why one just contributed $500 to the University Therapy (read 'Hot Tub') fund.
Once the alumni and university relationship is firmly established, a dependency is created. Dependency like substance abuse gradually demands increasing contributions of attention and resources until a breaking point is reached. This breaking point typically occurs at the end of the football season when the credit card bills arrive and the wife is threatening to take the two loud kids and move to her cousin's place near South Beach.
It should be noted that these dependencies are created in winning as well as losing environments. In winning environments however, there are more alumni to shoulder the burdens of keeping the players in hot tubs and nice cars. For rebuilding or losing programs, these dependencies really threaten financial health, family well being and all manner of relationships. So, before one has to endure news that his former wife is dating Rodrigo from the South Florida Modeling Agency, immediate action is required. Fortunately, science has provided us with at least two tactics that work.
Replacement
Replacing the substance at the core of the dependency is a common strategy. Frequently, an over dedicated alum turns his attention to the basketball program. The general strategy is to decrease the dependency though gradual reduction of the substituted environment.
Unfortunately, an indoor sport doesn't allow for nearly enough seating to bring enough alumni and cheerleaders together to generate the same level of interest and excitement that a big outdoor venue provides, so using basketball to replace football as an area of interest frequently fails.
The big risk to the replacement strategy occurs when a basketball program actually gets exciting. This creates yet another dependency that one has to wait until baseball season to cure. By this time, the ex-wife and Rodrigo will be a sipping Champaign in a hot tub of their own.
Should the replacement strategy be chosen, the author recommends hockey. Even at a professional level, hockey is fast enough to allow the viewer to forget about gawking at college aged coeds. And almost no one has hockey cheerleaders.
Many wives may be prevented from achieving the status of ex-wives by including them in the replacement area of interest. Replacement interests need not be sports related. Especially if one's wife has participated to any degree in the football season, the recovering fan will need to consider all options for replacement - just to be fair. These areas may include opera, classical music and other artistic disciplines far removed from anything resembling a sweat sock.
Rebound
The term 'rebound' is a more clever way of saying quitting 'cold turkey.' After a period of time removed from the dependency, the fan will simply rebound to something resembling normalcy. Rebound depression is a natural consequence here, but... depression is better than sending off alimony checks to South Florida. The central tenant of the Rebound strategy is to tough it out, read the updates on what ridiculous statements the new coach makes, and watch as the best recruits in your area commit to USC. And just deal with it.
The more difficult part of this strategy comes when trying to talk the wife into unpacking the UHaul and telling her with a straight face that you will never again drop $400 to pick up the bar tab for the senior members of the Pom squad. Should the alum be successful in coaxing the wife into the house, he must actually make conversation about something meaningful - like life, love, finances and try to find areas of common interest.
These areas of common interest then overlap with the Replacement tactic as some of these conversations will require actual commitment and follow through. Attending an opera really isn't the point of this. Should you get into a situation where you are committed to participate in something your very significant other is interested in, remember that you must actually 'participate.' When your wife attended a football game with you, she probably didn't just sit there when your team scored. Now when the fat lady sings, you don't stand up and do the wave, but you get the point. One must invest the effort to learn who Pavarotti was and what really distinguished him from John Mayer.
Joint Recovery
Occasionally, husband and wife teams will experience the same withdrawal and depression problems together. While it may appear to be an advantage to share a dedication to a particular football program, joint recoveries from football withdrawal are frequently more than twice the work. They are certainly almost twice as expensive. Since both parties to the relationship are involved in the problem, there is no one available with a strong connection to reality to set the baselines for expected behavior.
Connecting to reality is then the central part of a joint recovery. Reality consists of things like cleaning the house, paying the bills and shoveling snow. Sharing in these tasks is not something anyone would naturally give up Sports Center to do. However, the recovery requires tasks and chores to be shared. It also requires the couple to investigate what other areas of interest the relationship might pursue. These might include things like biking, hiking, dog walking - usually something ending in "ing" would work. This again implies action and participation. The exception to this rule - for reasons that should be obvious - would be the addition of (new or more) kids to the relationship.
Concluding the 2008 football season is best done in some form of ritual. Something like taking the Christmas lights down or finally throwing out some salt on that driveway ice patch might help you get it into your head that it is winter outside. Football will have to wait until the spring game. And when the spring game does roll around, for God's sake, don't pay for a ticket to see it. Just let it go by and take the wife to a nice dinner. Otherwise, she and Rodrigo will soon be drinking rum and chomping calamari under a palm tree.

Just like in the previous game, you can choose the time of the day, and which course you would like to try. Overall a fun game for the whole family.
43. Wii Fit - The most famous game for the Wii Balance Board. This is the game that got released first with the Board. Part of the title focus on your balance like the Balance Games and Yoga games. Our family's favorite are the Balance games. You start off with 5 games. The more time you spend exercising and playing the more games you can unlock. The other categories are Strength Training and Aerobics. You can even create a Wii Fit Channel - a mode where you don't have to put in the DVD to do a daily body test. Each time you do a body test you will be weighed and your balance will be tested. According to that you will get a score that is your Wii Fit Age. Don't take it too seriously if you are 10 or so years older than your real age. This should just motivate you to do daily exercises and keep in shape.
44. Wii Fit Plus - The just recently released sequel to the Wii Fit game. It combines the two games so you can play both of them from one CD. The difference is that you can now customize your workouts much easier and even decide if you want to do 20, 30 or 40 minute workouts. This game adds six new yoga activities and strength training exercises and 15 new balance games. A very fun game for the whole family not only if you are into fitness and weight loss.
45. Wii Music - Use the Balance Board to play 60+ instruments. But it does not matter if you press buttons at a certain time like in other music games. This is a very casual game, where there is no right or wrong. Just enjoy yourself while playing in a band. You can invite up to 4 people to play with you in your band. And you can even connect with friends through the Wifi connection. Choose your flavor like rock, jazz and Latin.
46. Winter Sports 2 The Ultimate Challenge - a winter themed game where you try out in 18 disciplines from 11 different winter sports. In this game you are in the center of sporting events that are broadcast all over the world. Some of the activities include snowboarding, ice skating, biathlon and ski jumping.
47. World Championship Athletics - Compete in 28 different summer themed sports games. Some of these are: high diving, hurdles and pole vault. See if you can win the gold medal and improve your own personal best.
48. Yoga - just recently released yoga game that focuses not only on yoga itself but also on its unique lifestyle. It lets you choose between story mode, where you start off as a complete yoga beginner and end up as a yoga guru. Training mode, where you can learn new poses. And Routine mode where you customize a workout that puts together several yoga poses. This game is a must if you liked the yoga exercises in the Wii Fit game.
Most of the games are just casual games that you play for fun. Some of them are excellent fitness games like Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus. And my pick for the most fun game from the whole list: Marble Saga Kororinpa. In this game you have to balance a marble through a maze and collect colored gems on the way. Might sound boring to you, but when you play it you get really addicted. You can play this game also with the Wii Remote only. (Not less fun!)

Home Business Tips - How Do You Stop Yourself From Stopping As You Build Your Home Business
Is your life as happy and fulfilling as you want it to be or as you dreamed it would be when you were younger? Are you going through your daily decisions without any thought or challenge? Do you make the same decisions over and over and over again?
Before I started building my home based MLM business I realized that I was not happy with my life, with my job or my home life. I realized that I was working in cubicle "padded cell", just like a slave in a slave camp. The worst part was that I had done it to myself.
Most people hold themselves back by their habits. You have thought patterns that are negative, these thought patterns then weaken your sense of self worth. Once you start down this road it becomes a downward spiral of negativity. At the end you can say "See I said I couldn't do it!". However if instead of continuing with the negative thoughts you ask yourself an empowering question like "How can I...?"
Most people do not automatically pick good memories to dwell on. You pick the ones where you did something wrong, said something stupid or embarrassed yourself. Then you play them over and over again so that you are doomed to repeat the behavior.
Next time you find yourself thinking or saying "See I said I couldn't do it!" think back to what your little voice in your head had been saying to you. You will find that they were not empowering thoughts; in fact you were probably mentally beating yourself up.
In order to stop yourself from quitting you must learn to be your own best cheerleader. Switch your thinking and your daily decisions to the positive. I am not saying that nothing bad is ever going to happen to you again but you can have a dramatic impact on your own results.

Winning in Youth Football
As a youth football coach your goals should be making sure the players are having a good experience and are learning the game of football. A solid repetition of the fundamental skills should be carried out throughout the year, helping each player reach his potential for that season.
That being said, I have the theory of why not try to win while you're accomplishing the above goals. I'm not talking about the very young flag leagues where no score is kept. We all know every parent on the sideline and most of the players keep the score anyway. I do not endorse keep score, counting wins or losses and acting like Vince Lombardi in these developmental leagues. Move the players around, giving everyone a chance, and ignore any type of record keeping.
I do believe in having all teams prepared, so even if you are coaching in a developmental league, do not embarrass the kids. Have them ready to play and make sure their fundamentals are solid. When you get to the keeping score level with records and playoffs, by all means try to win. Try to win, but noty at any costs.
Winning the championship, even at the Pop Warner level, feels great and will remain with you forever. How many chances you get to play for the title will depend on many factors. The main factor is the size of the town you are coaching for (if it is a travel team) and more important is how the players are divided up. If it is a draft and the teams will be split evenly you will have less chances of building a powerhouse. If you are fortunate to live in a large town who plays smaller towns, chances are you will play for many championships. I coach in the second smallest city in our conference yet have made the title game in two of the past three seasons. Over the twenty years, my teams play for the title about every three years. Unlike the higher levels of football, youth football does not see many upsets. The bigger towns with a larger number of players win the majority of the games.
It is not a common occurrence for my town to win titles. The city I coach for has been crowned champion only four times in the past two decades. It seems the only city with a longer dry spell is the New Orleans Saints. They arrived at the Super Bowl being victorious in only two playoff games in forty two years. The 2010 Saints team won their first two playoff games, equaling the all time win totals, and finished the job by winning the Super Bowl. You could visualize the confidence of the entire organization, particularly following the second half onside kick to open up the 3rd quarter. Talk about a bold move, proving the Saints showed up to win the game. The Saints were not shy, stating late in the season their goal was to go undefeated, unlike the Indy team who openly quit on the NFL, fans and themselves once they had secured home field advantage in the playoffs.
Enjoy the thrill if you ever get the opportunity to compete for a title as it is one of the most electrifying experiences you can have in youth football.

The Red Zone - Chapter 1 From "Democrats in the Red Zone" 2007
The political red zone
Every football fan in America knows about the "red zone" - the area on the playing field from the twenty-yard line to the goal line, beyond which lies the end zone. It's bad enough when a team doesn't score a touchdown or field goal from somewhere on the remaining eighty yards of the field. But if it fails to score when its offense first gets inside the red zone, its coaches and players get frustrated. When repeated trips to the red zone don't lead to points, fans start to boo and - especially if it's the second half of the game - leave the stands. Meanwhile, the sports announcers start making barely veiled comments suggesting the team could be a bunch of losers. On the opposing sideline, players grin and give each other high fives; while those on the short end of the score sit dazed on the bench, some hanging their towel-covered heads in shame. It ain't pretty. Let's face it: most people can't have confidence in a team that has trouble scoring. But by making adjustments to its game plan, even the most unlikely team can prove fans, commentators, opponents - and anyone else who thought it couldn't win - wrong.
In the National Football League, it can take decades to earn the respect that comes with a winning record. That's the story of the pro football team I've loved since I was a kid - the longtime underdog New England Patriots. Before they became known for winning, the Patriots racked up year after year of losing seasons. They were the Rodney Dangerfield of the NFL - couldn't get no respect. But in 1985, the team cast off its negative image and, after a respectable 11-5-0 season, overpowered three of its American Football Conference nemeses during the playoffs in an on-the-road display of guts and unity. The New York Jets, Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins fell to a scrappy, determined Patriots team that included quietly heroic personalities such as veteran quarterback Steve Grogan, offensive lineman John Hannah and coach Raymond Berry. They were AFC champs. Sure, in Super Bowl XX the team was convincingly mashed into the turf of the New Orleans Superdome by Mike Ditka's Chicago Bears. But despite that humiliating loss, the Patriots had overcome an important hurdle: they had shown they could win the "away games" during the playoffs, with their backs against the wall, and actually become Super Bowl contenders. It was the beginning of hope. For a while, it looked like that 1985 season was a flash in the pan. It took the team another decade or so to become regulars in the playoffs and consistent contenders for the Super Bowl's Lombardi Trophy (named after famed Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi). The missing links for the Patriots had been a coach with a brilliant strategic mind - and who would stick around for a while - and a QB who had what it took to help the team win big games on a regular basis. By the time the millennium rolled around, owner Bob Kraft had those missing links: Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Belichick, who took over the reins of the team from his mentor, Bill Parcells, redefined the concept of teamwork. Despite the high profile of charismatic individuals such as Brady and defensive captain Tedy Bruschi, the coach worked to counter the idea that the Patriots had "stars" whose achievement counted more than anyone else's. Belichick took a creative approach to employing the talent at his disposal, using key players at various positions on offense, defense and special teams. His motto has been to "play everybody." In one memorable moment, he even gave former Boston College Eagles star Doug Flutie - who joined the team as a backup QB toward the end of his pro career - the green light to drop-kick an extra point.
Brady, who wasn't even a top draft pick, eventually took over the QB spot from an inconsistent Drew Bledsoe. He then developed into the driven, pumped-up team leader that is every coach's dream - the kind of guy who helps get the best out of every player on every play. Great QBs infuse their teams with that all-important sense of unity, which is crucial to carry players through losses as well as wins and inspire them to fight another day. The Patriots have had so many great players at all positions over the team's history, it's hard to keep track of them all. Each player along the way helped the Patriots become Super Bowl champions. In the process, the team gained fans far beyond the borders of New England. The Patriots won the Big Game in 2002, 2003 and 2005; and as the 2007 season began, many sports pundits were picking them to go all the way once more. They'd come a long way, baby.
The way I see it, the Democratic Party has faced the same uphill battle in the game of politics the Patriots did for years in the NFL. I think most of the Democrats' problems have to do with their inability to control how the Party and its constituencies are perceived by key voting blocs. Dems have lost too many big elections by failing to score points in the political red zone - the area on the field where the thorniest social issues are in play. Related primarily to morality and race, those issues tend to generate the greatest division within the American electorate. It is in debates over social issues that voters' perceptions of each other are most apparent, and where prejudices can be the most easily manipulated. Yet judging by which battles they choose to fight and how they choose to fight them, Democrats always seem to think more voters agree with them on social issues than actually do. What I have to say might sound radical, but I don't think most voters cast ballots based on solid information about issues; I think most of us cast ballots based largely on how we view other people. For example, using rhetoric that appeals to voters' racial prejudices has worked well for the Republican Party, which has a more homogenous - mostly white and mostly social conservative - base. To neutralize the Republican edge with white voters, Democrats must emphasize values that unify their party with mainstream, "traditionalist" values and stop giving the impression that they're always signing onto quixotic quests for perfect justice, which has become a hallmark of their disparate constituencies.
Winning ways
Like winning football teams, winning political entities combine solid performance with heroic personalities to keep voters excited, tuned in and invested in the outcome of an election. Democrats can learn a lot about how competition works from Belichick's creative thinking on the sidelines and Brady's leadership on the field. But they can also learn from the Patriots about grace under pressure and how to turn adversity into a competitive advantage. The Patriots have had plenty of experience turning challenges into opportunities. That invaluable trait has contributed to their winning attitude, which is the mark of all true competitors - what sports aficionados call "heart." Apart from sheer talent and determination within the team structure, other factors contribute to success on the football field. First, it's a general rule in sports that when a team has home-field advantage - hosting the game on its own turf, surrounded by its own fans - it has a psychological edge over its opponent. Home teams are also better rested at game time, because their players don't have to spend time traveling into enemy territory. The home team might not always win, but the odds are in its favor. Then there are the fans. Over the course of the NFL season, fans fill stadiums, those stadiums fill with cheers and the noise of the crowd helps drown out the opposing QB's play calls. Football teams are comprised of eleven players, but the fans are collectively known as "the twelfth man" because of the impact they can have on team morale, and therefore on the outcome of a game. Every team needs fans to show up at home games and root for its players. But fans become demoralized by underperforming teams, which can lead to empty seats. Advertising, ticket and merchandise sales suffer, giving the team fewer resources to work with. Some fans may even switch their loyalty, at least temporarily, to another team.
In the game of political perception, the goal is to inspire the voting majority and gain greater electoral market share. This means Democrats must inspire not only their largely liberal fan base, but millions of voters who are not so liberal. Just as many fans of other NFL teams admire the Patriots, I have no problem rooting for teams and individual players that demonstrate character and put in great performances (except, of course, when they're playing the Pats). If you love the game, you admire great players no matter who they play for. For the Democratic Party, the lesson is to make sure they have as many candidates as possible who appeal to voters who don't necessarily consider themselves Democrats, not to mention conservative-leaning Democrats disenchanted with the Party. After all, voters who don't agree with the entire Republican Party platform may vote for Republican candidates they like individually. I don't generally vote for Republicans because their party's agenda is just too scary. But I've admired individual Republicans who aren't ideologues; who know to make common sense, people who favor policies to protect the environment and preserve individuals' right to privacy, especially in matters of health and family planning. I consider such people "traditionalists," because they tend to hold certain basic values that include making practical decisions in the interest of the greater good and respecting the principle of individual choice as long as those choices do not harm other people. The Democratic Party is my political home team because I've spent most of my life rooting for Democrats. But because of my frustration over the Party's lack of a coherent winning strategy and its candidates' inability to present an appealing portrait of themselves to voters, I became an Independent after the 2000 election. It didn't have to be this way.
I want Democrats to reflect on what football represents in American culture. Why? Because the values that bond football fans together offer Dems an antidote to their own tired delusions of liberal grandeur and clues on how to address social issues in a more voter-friendly way.
The goal for Democrats must be to a) make better decisions about which issues to focus on and b) devise more effective ways of promoting their views to key voting blocs.
Take the hot topic of religion, where Democrats have had such trouble gaining the confidence of the voting public: in the NFL, some players wear their faith on their sleeve, and that's just fine with many of us. Sportswriters have informed me that it became customary for some players to pray at midfield around 1982, right after the NFL players' strike, as an expression of solidarity. While NFL management may not have liked such fraternization between opposing teams, over time it seems to have become an accepted ritual.
So what do pro football players pray for? "They give thanks for getting through the game, they pray for continuing to be able to play the game [and] they also pray that the visiting team makes it back safely," Boston sportswriter Karen Guregian told me. Most fans have seen players from both sides kneel together and pray when a player is seriously hurt during a game. "The players who join in are essentially saying that while they take part in a violent game, they still have their beliefs and their desire to give thanks," Guregian explained. Friends who play football in semi-pro leagues have confirmed this. To me, the way NFL players express their personal religious faith on the public forum of the playing field is no threat to the principle of separation of church and state; rather, it's an appropriate expression of individual liberty. Just as NFL players do, many voters pray as a matter of spiritual practice whether they are adherents of an established religion or not. That commonality offers Dems a guide on how to make peace with religion as a topic of political conversation.
Living dangerously - a tale of turnovers
What usually makes the difference in whether a team wins or loses, despite the number of rushing and passing yards it amasses, is turnovers. When a team hands the ball over to its opponent through either a fumble or an interception, it gives that opponent momentum. Whether or not the opposing team converts that turnover into points, the biggest impact on the team that loses the ball is usually psychological. Turnovers can deflate players' confidence and cause them to make more mistakes, sealing the team's fate. Teams prone to turnovers don't win Super Bowls - unless they're very, very lucky. And no team worth its salt relies on luck. Democrats have committed far too many perception turnovers in the political red zone over the past several decades. Those turnovers have come in the form of poor word choices, bad photo ops and even bad hair (or, in the case of John Edwards, hair that's too good). Every presidential election season, a new slate of usual and unusual Democratic suspects emerges. Each new group commits a range of perception blunders that provide negative reinforcement of the Party's image.
For example, it's hard to take candidates seriously when their hair carries its own comical message. In this respect, 2004 primary contenders Al Sharpton and Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) were clearly hair challenged. The two candidates were already in popularity deficit with the voting majority thanks to their left-of-center platforms. Sharpton's below-the-ears perm with white sideburns was an apparent style nod to soul singer James Brown, but it didn't translate into a presidential image. Meanwhile, Kucinich's side-parted do looked nerdy, to say the least. (Kucinich threw his hat in the ring again for the 2008 race, apparently using his long-shot status to act as the Democratic Party's voice of conscience. But he couldn't escape his own image. Bill Maher gave a blunt assessment of Kucinich's situation in August 2007, when he told Larry King that the candidate "looks like an elf.") Democrats generally commit more perception turnovers than Republicans. But in 2006, they got a rare break when Republican lawmakers and loyalists were caught flagrantly exposing their own moral hypocrisy. First, there was Florida Congressman Mark Foley, a self-appointed protector of children and member of the anti-gay marriage brigade who turned out to have a penchant for male congressional pages.
Then, one of the Republicans' conservative lieutenants in the "culture war," evangelical church leader Ted Haggard, was outed by his boy-toy for living a closet, methamphetamine-fueled homo-sex life. The Republicans sustained additional collateral damage in 2007, when Louisiana Congressman David Vitter's phone number appeared in the records of a Washington madam and Idaho Senator Larry Craig was caught in a gay sex solicitation sting in an airport bathroom. (Craig initially resigned over the incident. He later reversed his decision and decided to serve out his term, despite a judge's ruling that he could not withdraw his guilty plea in the case.) But despite that slew of morality mess-ups, Democrats can't expect Republicans and their cultural allies to make those kinds of mistakes on any kind of regular basis. They should expect them not to, and proceed accordingly.
The Dems' QB problem
I grew up thinking Democrats were the good guys, because they were the political descendants of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who helped rescue America from the Great Depression and the world from the Nazis during World War II; and John F. Kennedy, the handsome prince of politics who asked us to consider what we could do for our country more than what our country could do for us. But as I've watched Democrats in more recent years, those good guys have looked more and more like 90-lb. weaklings. The first presidential campaign I remember was in 1972, when Democratic contender George McGovern challenged Republican incumbent Richard M. Nixon. I was in the fifth grade, but even then I understood how perception influenced politics. McGovern seemed pale and timid, even physically weak. Nixon's five o'clock shadow gave an impression of swarthy mean-spiritedness, but he also seemed more vigorous than McGovern. Nixon's temperament also suggested an unwillingness to back down, a typical winning stance for a wartime president. In the end, McGovern won only Massachusetts and D.C. - the worst presidential election defeat in modern history.
I think Jimmy Carter's victory in 1976 was something of a fluke, the result of a temporary backlash against the corruption of the Nixon regime. I say this because Carter's demeanor was so gentle it verged on effeminate, and I don't think American voters equate gentle men with the role of president. When Carter's backbone was dramatically tested, voters were all too willing to cut him loose. Just prior to his reelection bid, in November 1979, 66 people were taken hostage in the American embassy in Iran's capital, Tehran, by militant Islamic students. The crisis lasted 444 days, with the U.S. initiating a failed rescue effort that resulted in the deaths of five Air Force airmen and three marines. The ordeal contributed to Carter's image - and by association the Democratic Party's - as weak in the face of America's enemies. When Republican challenger Ronald Reagan came strutting along with his California cowboy decisiveness, determined to free the Iranian hostages and bring the Cold War to an America-friendly conclusion, he blew Carter off the beach. In the 1980 election, Carter won just six states and D.C., a defeat mirroring the Patriots' 46-10 demise at the hands of the Bears in the 1986 Super Bowl.
Let's examine the Democrats' actual draft choices for presidential QB over the past six election cycles:
1984: In a game that depends on personality, the Democrats nominate the plodding, bureaucratic-looking Walter Mondale, Carter's former vice president. With his gray pallor and dark eye pouches, Mondale is perhaps the least inspiring team captain Dems could have asked for to challenge the over-popular Reagan. Even Mondale's spunky vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro can't liven up the ticket, which emulates McGovern's 1972 tally by winning only Mondale's home state of Minnesota and D.C.
1988: Second-stringer Michael Dukakis allows himself to be caught in a goofy photo op, sitting in a military tank sporting what looks like an oversized headset. Political cartoonists have a field day. And, of course, there's that "Willie Horton" thing1 and some comment about endive, a vegetable too many of us haven't heard of that also sounds foreign (not good). Dukakis loses a huge lead in the polls on his way to conceding the election to Vice President George H.W. Bush. He at least hits double digits, carrying ten states and D.C.
1992: Bill Clinton is an unknown quantity from training camp with a reputation for off-the-field sexcapades. He impresses Democratic coaches, who hold their breath hoping they aren't taking a huge gamble. Clinton wows Democratic fans in the primaries with his ability to get right up after taking some big political hits. He carries the Dems to their first presidency in a generation with the help of a "giant sucking sound" - the candidacy of Ross Perot - that is incumbent George H.W. Bush's game plan headed South.
1996: After winning a second presidential term, superstar QB Clinton is called for a personal foul after messing around with practice cheerleader Monica Lewinsky. Nearly yanked from the Oval Office by Republican opponents on an impeachment crusade, he limps into the sunset of his presidency with a groin injury.
2000: They say a superstar is a tough act to follow. Clinton VP Al Gore makes a valiant attempt to take the helm of the Party, but voters find it hard to get excited. Everyone later agrees Gore should have let a rookie step in because he never learned to run "out of the pocket" and avoid pressure from the Republican defense. Gore would have done better to join management and stay off the field altogether, pundits suggest. As the presidential contest runs into triple sudden-death overtime, the Dems are destined to lose on a series of official calls courtesy a Supreme Court whose 5-4 vote in favor of George W. Bush mirrors the partisan loyalties of its conservative Republican appointees.
2004: Veteran benchwarmer John Kerry is called in to try and win one for the Dems. Fans hope he'll take back the presidential trophy from a Republican team millions of voters believe won ugly in 2000 thanks to biased Supreme Court referees. But Kerry has a tendency to freeze in the pocket and is repeatedly sacked by a Republican defense bent on diminishing his status as a war hero. Some wonder why sunny WR John Edwards isn't put in more often to help the Dems make big plays. Kerry gets the team to the four-yard line, but blows the drive on downs.
It really annoyed me that Kerry was the only guy the Democratic Party could come up with in 2004 to challenge the underhanded politics, deception and nearly visionary stupidity of the Bush White House. Kerry's public persona - the "flip-flopping," the vagueness, the apparent lack of conviction and his gentleman-stuck-in-the-wrong-century aura - had all been part of his demeanor as a senator. Democrats knew what kind of image Kerry would project, so it should have come as no surprise when that image spelled failure for the Party in its bid to regain the presidency.
In contrast to Kerry, Howard Dean initially looked like a worthy contender. The former Vermont governor came with conservative-friendly positions such as fiscal restraint and an established respect for the concerns of gun owners. He supported civil unions for gay couples, a position that could have neutralized attacks from Republicans on gay marriage. He was also capable of delivering a sentence in plain English. I thought Dean was the Democrats' best chance to pull in Republican crossover votes. But while Dean's campaign team raked in cash from small donors over the Internet, it didn't prepare readymade rebuttals to critics who were sure to point out Dean's long career trail of awkward and counterproductive comments. (He had earned a reputation for "shooting from the lip.") Not surprisingly, by the time the Iowa caucuses rolled around, Dean had found a way to blow his chances for the nomination. Cautious Iowa Democrats decided Kerry's record as a war hero was their best chance to counter Bush's macho pro-war role playing; and few could have foreseen the Swift Boat Veterans for "truth" looming on the horizon (see Chapter 4). With Kerry as the primary victor in Iowa, I knew Democrats would have a tough go of it that November because U.S. senators - especially those who have been in the Senate for a while - generally don't make good presidential candidates (see Chapter 17). The perception of public figures is also influenced by how those figures perceive themselves. Kerry seemed to take himself so seriously that he came across as aloof; he just couldn't connect with average citizens. Candidates with more potential appeal such as General Wesley Clark might have led to Democrats to victory - if only Clark's campaign hadn't been torpedoed in embryo thanks to allies such as Michael Moore (see Chapter 6). Iowa caucus voters in 2004 were obviously trying to do the best they could with what they had.
Wanted: Big Picture thinkers
So how do you pick a winning QB? One role in football that doesn't get a lot of airplay is that of general manager - the guy who works with coaches to find and sign the best players available.
Congressman Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), who was elected to chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2005, filled that function with some success in 2006 by ensuring the Party drafted candidates that could win in more conservative districts. One thing is clear: in the unruly, undisciplined and short-sighted exercise that is the presidential primary season, too many cooks keep spoiling the Democrats' soup. First, Democrats need to convince more candidates not to run. Secondly, the Party's base needs to be disciplined into accepting candidates who can actually win in a red state - or five. Much has changed since the consciousness-raising events of the 1960s from which the contemporary Democratic Party has drawn much of its presumed moral authority on social issues. You can't win elections if you're playing with outdated rules. If Democrats keep giving Republicans the opportunity to make them look bad, they will keep botching their chances to attain the presidency.
The Dems always seem to be playing defense and that performance has been mediocre, at best. Their offense, more often than not, has been an outright disaster. The Party needs a great head coach who will devise a master plan and put in place a focused and effective staff of coordinators to execute it. The goal must be to inspire the Party's players - from local school board officials, to members of Congress, to governors, to presidential candidates - to carry that plan out as a team. As a result of the 2006 midterm elections, Democrats achieved majorities in the House and Senate - but those majorities, especially in the Senate, were not significant enough for them to effectively challenge President Bush on his continued campaign in Iraq, among other things. This left voters who elected Democrats based largely on antiwar sentiment frustrated, and it didn't take long after the Dems' victory celebration for polls to reflect a level of voter dissatisfaction with the Democratic Congress on par with Bush's low numbers. If achieving the support of a greater number of voters is the Democrats' biggest problem, why aren't they doing something truly in their own best interest and that of the nation - something they should have done decades ago as the majority party, something truly democratic: pushing for the enactment of legislation that will make the day American citizens exercise their most sacred constitutional duty - voting - a national holiday?
The Democratic Party as a whole needs to submit itself to a very different strategy: button down, get in sync and - to use a term that defined congressional Republicans in the post-Gingrich era - march (more) in lockstep. They need to get their priorities straight, and in order. All of this in service to one goal: winning. My purpose is to connect the dots of perception as a way to encourage Democrats to look at the game of politics from more of a cultural than academic perspective. In the stadium of American politics, the field is comprised of cultural events. How voters perceive those events affects voter beliefs. Voter beliefs drive voting patterns. Voting patterns determine which party will prevail. Studying the game of football - its culture, its intelligence and its language - should help Democrats appeal to more voters beyond their base. That "football logic" goes beyond mere intellect. It comes in various modes, from management to coaching to playing. Each mode requires particular skills and reflexes, insights and actions, all of which are crucial to a team's chances of success.
To become winners on the political playing field, Democrats should consider that multi-layered approach to strategy as they work to control and protect the ball of perception.
The bottom line? Who controls perception controls the game.
*We all know how that 2007 season worked out for the Pats. In a terrible example of "What goes around, comes around," after an undefeated regular season of 16-0 (the first such regular-season record in history) they were beaten by the underdog New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII by a measly three points; a reverse mirror image (or whatever you want to call it) of the Patriots' own upset of the St. Louis Rams in 2002. I am not recommending that the Democratic Party presidential contender, Barack Obama, emulate that spectacular fall from grace by the Pats last year, although America's lingering cultural disease of racism may hurt his game. Let's hope the American citizenry has more sense than to allow a rare opportunity of electing a truly viable candidate who HAPPENS TO BE BLACK to pass in November.

Rowdy Shows His Heart for the Dallas Cowboys
Image : http://www.flickr.com
The NFL Dallas Cowboys are a fan favorite within the borders of Texas, and far beyond. For more than forty years the team has performed at a consistently high level. In addition to their great success on the field, "America's Team" has been just as successful off the field and is considered to be one of the most valuable sports teams in North America. Behind every great sports franchise is an identifiable symbol. The Dallas Cowboys are lucky to have two very identifiable symbols - the world famous Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and the team's mascot, Rowdy.
Rowdy became the official mascot of the Dallas Cowboys in 1996 and is outfitted like a real cowboy, complete with a cowboy hat and cowboy boots. He proudly wears the single star of the Dallas Cowboys on his chest and sleeves. Rowdy's main duty as the team's mascot is to create game day enthusiasm at Texas Stadium. To get the fans pumped and involved in the game, Rowdy drives on his four-wheeler, holds up signs that read "Let's Go Cowboys" and has fun tossing t-shirts into the stands for the fans to catch. He also has fun at the games mocking the opponents. Rowdy participates in all Dallas Cowboys home games and select away games. During the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Rowdy is in full attendance as host of Rowdy's Kid Zone. He plays with the kids at camp taking them through obstacle courses, introducing them to the Cowboys experience (which consists of a football toss, a field goal kick and more) and encouraging them to chant for their favorite player.
The Dallas Cowboys are an integral part of the community of Dallas and its surrounding area. The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are a common sight in the community raising awareness for different causes. Rowdy himself, a readily identifiable symbol of the Dallas Cowboys football team, is also happy to do his part for the community. As part of the Cowboys community awareness, Rowdy attends and participates in over 300 events a year. He participates in events such as the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure, the Salvation Army, and Special Olympics As well, he visits retirement centers, hospitals, schools, birthday parties and grand openings. Rowdy is a very visible part of the Dallas community.
Another very important part of Rowdy's duties is to attend the annual NFL Mascot Convention. Held in a selected city each year, NFL mascots gather at a convention to discuss and share ideas in regard to promoting mascot awareness and mischievous mascot acts. Being good at what you do can also have its rewards. In 1999 and 2001 Rowdy had the honor of being selected as one of the top NFL mascots as he represented the Dallas Cowboys at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. There he not only took part in the NFL Pro Bowl game but was also involved in the Battle of the Grid Iron, Special Olympics and much more.
It goes without saying that Rowdy has quite the following and has been reproduced in a number of ways. Rowdy's likeness can be found as a plush figure or golf club head cover. There's also a Rowdy Christmas stocking and Rowdy wall hooks to be had. These items and much more Dallas Cowboys memorabilia can be found at Dallas-Cowboys-apparel.com.
Rowdy is a visible symbol of Cowboys football. He helps bring enthusiasm and team spirit to the game as well as highlighting events and helping efforts in his community. There's little doubt that with all the passion and inspiration Rowdy brings to the field and the community that he is more than living up to his name.

Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys have often been referred to as "America's Team" and it's pretty easy to see why. They clearly have the most number of fans among all NFL teams, thanks to their storied history and their phalanx of great players.
The Cowboys, who currently play in the suburb of Irving in Dallas, Texas, have the most Super Bowl appearances with eight. They also hold the record for the most Super Bowl championships in the NFL with five, a record that they share with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers. Before the NFL and AFL merged, the Cowboys reached the NFL championship game twice.
Dallas also became the first NFL team to win three Super Bowls in four years. The only other team to achieve this feat are the New England Patriots. In addition, the Cowboys have also made it to the NFL playoffs the most times among all teams, a total of 27 times as of 2004. In that span, they have also won 32 of 54 postseason games. Those 54 games are also an NFL record for most playoffs games played.
They also hold the NFL records for the longest streak of consecutive winning seasons with 20, which they set from 1966 to 1985, as well as the longest streaks of winning seasons with at least 10 games, which stands at 24.
Clearly, the Cowboys are one of the winningest and most successful NFL teams in league history.
Obviously, success on the field has also translated into success in terms on earnings and profitability. The prestigious Forbes magazine estimates that the Cowboys are worth about $1.1 billion, a level that makes them among the most financially valuable football teams as well as professional teams in any sport in North America.
The Cowboys started out as an expansion team in the NFL in the 1960 season and they've certainly come a long way since. By 2009, the Cowboys will be moving into a brand new stadium in Arlington.

Inherent Dangers in the Sport of Cheerleading
Levels of Safety
There are three levels of safety/injury in the sport of cheerleading in the two different cheerleading sports. Cheerleading ranks as the most dangerous women's sport in all safety areas. The first level of safety involves catastrophic injury in which involves permanent paralysis or death. The second level of safety involves injuries for which the athlete must receive hospital care. The third level of safety involves injuries which require missing or altering an athlete's practice or competition schedule.
Height and Motion
There are logistical reasons why cheerleading is dangerous. Any activity involving height and motion involves the risk of injury. Cheerleading utilizes tumbling (motion) and basket tosses and pyramids (height and motion) and thus is inherently dangerous to some extent. Choosing to participate exposes cheerleaders to an increased risk of injury, including the risk of catastrophic injury.
Performance Areas
Cheerleaders, except in competitions, perform on surfaces designed for an entirely different sport. Basketball floors and football fields were not designed with cheerleaders in mind to even a minor degree. Even the layout of most basketball and football (and other sports) facilities are not planned with a specific cheerleading area designated, so cheerleaders are stuck performing around the edges of anther sports playing area.
Failure to Warn
One of the legal liabilities of any sport and certainly any sports injury lawsuit involves the failure to warn the participants in the activity of the dangers of their participation. There seems to be little doubt that cheerleaders, especially young cheerleaders, and their parents are not sufficiently aware of the dangers they are being exposed to by participation in the sport of cheerleading. While we are not in favor of the sometimes recommended scare tactic methods of warning athletes of dangers (don't create self-fulfilling prophecy psychology), there is no doubt that cheerleaders would be safer if they understood that safety practices are never to be bypassed.
Cheerleading Competitions
Cheerleading has split into two distinct sports, although some programs perform and compete in both. Cheerleading used to be an athletic activity designed to act as a support system for other sports. There was more interest in boosting school and team spirit than in increasing skill difficulty. Cheer competitions changed all that as difficulty was introduced as an important factor in judging cheer competitions.
Alphabet Soup
There has been a proliferation of cheerleading associations, matching the rise of the popularity of cheerleading competitions. Often, the primary motivation for the start-up, operation and management of cheerleading associations is financial. Coaching and safety considerations, other than at their own competitions, camps and clinics can often fall by the wayside when the primary association activities are financial.

Wall Blocking Technique For Youth Football
Image : http://www.flickr.com
The more years you coach, you start to recognize certain things remain the same. For myself, it is an introductory offensive line blocking system, known as Wall Blocking. There are some "gurus" who insist they are the founders (which is astonishing since I was implementing it BEFORE they began coaching), but no matter it is a mighty, uncomplicated and good way of coaching your offensive line. It teaches your players how to block as a unit. It is a variation of zone blocking.
This blocking has been the one staple in my over twenty years of coaching pee wee football, for my offensive linemen. Use it since it is simple to teach and works on a variety of grade levels. This style of offensive blocking has served me well with the older tackle kids as well as the younger flag players. It has been used with great success on my championship fourteen year old travel teams as well as the younger teams I have been a part of. Heck, I have even exploited wall blocking on my five year old flag football team.
The easiest manner in which to instruct wall blocking is to start the linemen with very tight splits. When we talk about a line split we are talking about the space between the offensive lineman. You instruct the entire line that on the snap of the football all of the lineman move united, keeping as close to each other as possible.
Teach this technique to both the right and the left making sure the lineman stay together "like a wall" as they move together in unison. The secret is making sure that all of the offensive linemen open up, seal, move in the same direction and at the equivalent speed. There will be multiple repetitions needed to make sure in the wall stays intact, especially when the players start moving in a direction. Keeping repeating it to the kids, telling them we cannot allow any holes, or penetration in our wall. Tell the kids the if there are open areas, or penetration against our wall, we will leak, allowing for the worst case scenario. The biggest problem is when a defensive opponent rushes into our running backs, stopping them for no gain.
We have a main goal and that is to hold together a compressed moving wall, in a single direction.
A few of the primary advantages of wall blocking include:
Not difficult to instruct It is successful versus any defensive alignment It neutralizes defensive blitzing It works both ways (left and right) It has been successful with every age group It has been successful with every kind of unique skill level It has been successful in making outstanding open areas for the running game
Wall blocking has been and always will be an crucial blocking plan I teach to every player, on every squad I coach. I always instruct this technique early in the season since we will use it all season. I understand the benefits it gives my team no matter which style of offense I am using this season.

Dallas Cowboys 2006 Preview
Last season for the Dallas Cowboys was bittersweet. On one hand, they managed to rebound from their poor 2004 season. However, they failed to make the playoffs, despite a 9-7 record, by one game. Their archenemy, Washington, picked up 10 wins and made it in. This season has been filled with movement, and the Cowboys are hoping they have the right mix for the 2006 season.
Key Additions
The single most important addition is wide receiver Terrell Owens. He gives the Cowboys speed and a bona fide playmaker. He might also give them headaches and turmoil. See the Eagles of 2005. Owner Jerry Jones loves to gamble and show his Texas flash. This is a huge gambler for the Cowboys, but if it works out, they can smile big when they play the Eagles.
Quarterbacks
The quarterback position is filled by Drew Bledsoe. He has fourteen years experience. However, this is a good and bad thing. How many more years does he have left in him? He had far too many interceptions last year. Also, there are depth issues with the Cowboys. If Bledsoe fails or gets hurt, the Cowboys will need to rely on backup QB Drew Henson. While he went to NFL Europe for some practice, he's too green to lead a team to the playoffs.
Running Backs
The running back position is another concern for the Cowboys. They will probably go to a dual system and alternate between Julius Jones and Marion Barber. Jones has been pretty solid--when he is healthy. While Barber can pick up the slack, he's not a primetime running back. The Cowboys running game is expected to be slightly above average.
Receivers
The addition of Terrell Owens boosts the receiving core to new levels. If Owens can keep his mouth shut and just play the game, the Cowboys will have a very nice air attack on the field. As mentioned, Jerry Jones took a big gamble, so we will have to wait and see.
Defense & Special Teams
The Cowboys defense is firming up and could be in the top 10 next season. While they won't shut down anyone, they might now have to. On a scale of 1 to 10, the defense is sitting around a 7 or 8 overall. Health will be a main issue. One can only hope that the special teams play better in 2006. The Cowboys were atrocious in field goal kicking. It cost them games. The arrival of Mike Vanderjagt should yield huge improvements.
2006 Prediction
The Dallas Cowboys have made some key improvements to their team. They have just as good of a shot to win the NFC East as any other team in the division. The NY Giants figure to pose the biggest threat. With the NFC being as soft as it is right now, the Cowboys have a very real shot at the playoffs this upcoming season.

Why Dallas Cowboys Fans Are The Best
If you've ever wondered why Dallas Cowboys fans are the best, simply go back to those rare times in the franchise's history that they were not being successful.
Where many sports fans have a tendency to be very impatient, and demand the head of the coach, or sometimes even the franchise owner, when things are not as they think they should be, the Dallas Cowboys fans have stood by the team through two terrible droughts of success. They knew that if they stuck by the team, success would follow. Both times, they were spectacularly proven right.
Good sports teams are not built in five minutes. It takes time to build any team into a cohesive unit where the players will instinctively know what their team mates will be going to do, and where anticipation adds a crucial factor to speed.
This is even more so at the start of a franchise's time in a new league. Dallas Cowboys were in that position back in the early 1960s. Having just been formed as an expansion team, they were without a win in their first season, and continued to struggle throughout the first half of the decade. The owners and fans showed faith in coach Tom Landry, and the result was a period of unmatched success that would last for twenty years. The record of nine consecutive play-off appearances is still an all time NFL record.
Another illustration as to why Dallas Cowboys Fans Are The Best came at the end of the 1980s, just as coach Tom Landry departed. During this season, Dallas endured its worst record since that very first season. They finished 1-15, the worst record in the NFL. The positive side of that, of course, was that they were able to draft the first player in the college draft. They chose wisely in quarterback Troy Aikman. As well as drafting Aikman, the Cowboys traded their running star Herschel Walker for more draft picks, allowing them to bring in a team of young talented players who could all grow together.
The fans' patience was rewarded very quickly, as only three years later Dallas won the Super Bowl. That is an extraordinarily short time for any franchise to go from league worst to league best. They proved their point by winning the Super Bowl again the following year.
It has become increasingly rare for fans of losing sports teams to show any loyalty or faith in the people managing the system. Often, capable coaches are driven out of office by fan power, before they have really had any chance to put their systems into place, and have the players learn those systems to become effective within them. Another coach will then come in, and the process will have to start all over again with nothing achieved. That this did not happen in Dallas, twice when it could have done, is clear testimony as to Why Dallas Cowboys Fans Are The Best.
