Dallas Cowboys Clinch NFC Title

The Dallas Cowboys Clinch NFC with four games remaining in the National Football League regular season, the Dallas Cowboys have clinched the National Football Conference (NFC) for the first time since 1998. The Cowboys did it in dramatic fashion by coming back in the dying seconds to win their twelfth game of the season over the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys seem to have the ability to win even if they have to invent ways to do so.

The Lions appeared to have the Cowboys just where they wanted them using a balanced offensive attack to keep Tony Romo and the best NFC offense off the field. However, it was not to be as the Lions surrendered a fourth quarter scoring drive in the final 2 minutes and 15 seconds to secure the victory for the Cowboys.

The Lions appeared to have the Cowboys number as their running duo of Kevin Jones and T.J. Duckett combined for 152 yards, the most allowed by the Cowboys this season on 32 attempts with three touchdowns. The Lions passing game accounted for 248 yards. On top of this the Lions didn't turn the ball over the entire game. Despite the impressive statistics the Dallas Cowboys found a way to secure the come-back win.

With the score 27 to 21 for the Lions the Cowboys had to drive 60 yards in the final 57 seconds, without the benefit of a time-out, to score the winning touchdown. With just 18 seconds left in the game a 16 yard touchdown pass from Romo to Witten clinched the game and the NFC title for the Cowboys.

This season the Cowboys have the NFL's second-ranked offense and eighth -ranked defense which have all contributed to their NFC-leading record. Add to that, Tony Romo's quarterback rating is second to only Tom Brady and Terrell Owens is the NFC's leading scorer among non-kickers. The Cowboys have a 12-1 record, seven game winning streak and are undefeated on the road thus far this season. All of these impressive statistics have led the Dallas Cowboys to the NFC title, their first since 1998.

With just three weeks left in the season the Cowboys have just three more opponents to face. First up will be a home game against the Philadephia Eagles followed by two road games, the first against the Carolina Panthers and the second against the Cowboys' long time rival the Washington Redskins.

It's been a long road back but the Dallas Cowboys are on track with NFC title and a path to Super Bowl XLII.

The Coaching Legacy of Tom Landry

The NFL Dallas Cowboys, "America's Team", have been a success on and off the field for more than 30 years. They are a fan favorite in the state of Texas, all over the USA and internationally, as well. It is the play on and off the field, and the individuals who have contributed to that play, that is at the heart of the Cowboys great success.

Through its franchise history, the Dallas Cowboys have had a number of all-stars whose skills and achievements have created legends and contributed to Dallas Cowboys history. Endless players have donned the single star and blue and white jerseys of the Dallas Cowboys and taken to the field at Texas Stadium. In so doing, some of them, such as Bob Lilly, Roger Staubach, and Tony Dorsett have become legends.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most successful teams in the history of the National Football League and hold numerous league records, thanks to these players and countless others over the years. It is, however, not just the players that have contributed to the success of the cowboys it is also those who walk the sidelines at each practice and game. Tom Landry was one such man. Indeed, he walked the sidelines as Dallas Cowboys coach for a remarkable twenty-nine years.

During Landry's reign as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from the start of the franchise in 1960 through to his departure in 1989, the team established a number of records. One such record is the most consecutive winning seasons - 20 in all - from 1966 to 1985. Additionally, under Landry's reign the Cowboys were Super Bowl Champions two times. The list of team records, part of Dallas Cowboys history, established under Landry's reign goes on and on.

Tom Landry, a Texas native, attended the University of Texas before interrupting his education to serve in the U.S Army Air Forces during World War II. Upon returning from the war he returned to university where he played fullback and defensive back on the Texas Longhorns' New Year's Day bowl game winners in 1948 and 1949. From 1949 through 1955, Landry played defensive back in the NFL where in 1954 he was selected as an all-pro. In his last two years as a player he also took on the duties of assistant coach. In just 80 games Landry had 32 interceptions. At the start of the 1956 season, Landry turned to full time coaching duties as defensive coordinator with the New York Giants (his last team as a player). The offensive coordinator for the team was none other than Vince Lombardi. Under the guidance of these two men the Giants made three appearances in the NFL Championship from 1956 to 1959.

In 1960 Landry became the first head coach of the newly established franchise Dallas Cowboys - a job he would hold for 29 seasons (1960-88). The first few years for the Cowboys were rough but Landry's hard work and determination slowly paid off as they posted 10 wins in the 1966 season and made it to the NFL championship game. Dallas lost the game but it was the start of what would be their 20 year span of winning seasons.

During Tom Landry's tenure, the Dallas Cowboys became Super Bowl Champions twice (1972, 1978), won 5 NFC titles, 13 Divisional titles, and Landry compiled the 3rd most wins of all time for an NFL coach with a 270-178-6 record. His 20 career playoff victories are the most of any coach in NFL history. One of the most impressive accomplishments is his record for coaching a team to 20 consecutive winning seasons (1966-1985), an NFL record, and one of the longest winning streaks in professional sports.

Landry brought many new innovations to the game during his coaching days in the NFL. During his time as the New York Giants defensive coordinator, Tom Landry revolutionized the defensive game with the introduction of the now-popular 4-3 Defense. It featured four down lineman (two ends and two defensive tackles on either side of the offensive center) and three linebackers -- middle, left, and right. Landry's innovation was the middle linebacker who he had stand up and move back two yards Previously, a lineman had been placed over the center. Landry also invented and popularized the use of keys (analyzing offensive tendencies) to determine what the offense might do.
Vince Lombardi, coach of the Green Packers at the time Landry was hired as Dallas Cowboys coach had implemented a "Run to Daylight" idea, where rather than a specific assigned hole, the running back went to an open space,. Landry decided that the way to stop it was to take away daylight and thus he refined his own 4-3 defense thereby creating the "Flex Defense" - a defense that altered its alignment to counter what the offense might do. The Flex Defense was also innovative in that it was a zone defense against the run as each defender was responsible for a given gap area, and was to stay in that area before they knew where the play was going.

After inventing the Flex Defense, Landry invented an offense to score on it as he revived the man-in-motion and the shotgun formation. Landry's biggest contribution in this area was the use of "pre-shifting" where the offense would shift from one formation to the other before the snap of the ball. Although this tactic was not new, it had been around since the turn of the 20th Century, Landry was the first coach to use the approach on a regular basis the idea being to break the keys the defense used to determine what the offense might do.

Known as a quiet, religious man, Landry took everything in stride and was unfazed by all the hype surrounding Cowboys football and America's Team. Landry's twenty-nine years with the team came to an end shortly before the 1989 season when the Cowboys were sold to Jerry Jones. Landry was replaced by Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones' former teammate at the University of Arkansas. The unceremonious dismissal of Landry is, to this day, regarded as a classless, disrespectful act on the part of Jones. Landry was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame less than two years after his last game. In 1993 Landry was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor at Texas Stadium.

Tom Landry died of leukemia at the age of 75 in Dallas on February 12, 2000. The Dallas Cowboys wore a patch depicting Landry's trademark fedora on their uniforms during the 2000 season to honor this icon of Dallas Cowboys history. Tom Landry's vision and ideas transformed the many stars of the Cowboys into legends. He himself left behind a great legacy with the Dallas Cowboys and the National Football League at large.

Spinal Cord Injuries During Football Season

Football is a violent sport. For many fans, this is part of its appeal. For the players, however, the violence inherent in the game poses a serious health risk. With this year's football season already begun, there's no time like the present to focus on the potential for spinal cord injury, measures for prevention, and methods of treatment.

Spinal Cord Injuries

The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. It is protected by the vertebrae and extends into the lumbar spine. The signals that pass between the brain and the body via the spinal cord are responsible for regulating our most essential functions: bowel and bladder control, blood pressure, body temperature regulation and sensation.

Injury to the spinal cord can occur as the result of tumors, developmental disorders, disease, and - what I'll be focusing on in this article - trauma. A physical trauma can cause strain on the spinal cord, compression of the spinal cord, or fracture of the vertebrae surrounding the spinal cord, resulting in damage to the cord itself. Oftentimes, when the spinal cord is injured, the messages cannot pass between the brain and the body. When this is the case, essential bodily functions can fail - causing paralysis or even death.

Football Injuries

Head, neck, and spine injuries are common in football; this stands to reason as falls and hard hits are an everyday occurrence for all players - no matter what position they play or level of play (high school, college, or the NFL). If the angle and velocity of these impacts are just right, spinal cord injury is a natural result. Various sources offer statistics regarding football-related injuries. Although the exact figures in these reports may vary, all sources agree that even just a single severe spinal cord injury is too many.

To be fair, I believe equal attention should be paid to the athletes on the sidelines: cheerleaders. These men and women have progressed to complex acrobatics that send them hurtling through the air. Stunts like these can result in cheerleaders falling on their heads or backs, or with other cheerleaders landing on top of them. Clearly, these scenarios can result in head trauma or spinal cord injury, and these types of injuries are also an unfortunate reality of the sport of cheer leading.

Treatment

At my practice, we use several methods for treating our patients with spinal cord injuries on Long Island. The ultimate goal of these therapies is to decompress the spinal cord and stabilize the spinal column.

After surgery, most of our spinal cord injury patients in the NYC metro also undergo physical therapy and other ancillary therapies. Thanks to advanced treatment methods, life expectancy and quality of life for these patients may be significantly improved. Victims of these injuries can go on to lead full lives, even if they have lost the use of their arms and legs.

Prevention While improving treatment for football-related injuries is a worthy goal, equal emphasis needs to be placed on preventing the injuries from occurring in the first place. I can offer several suggestions.

Coaches and trainers: Perform thorough physical exams to ensure that no athletes are playing injured. Encourage training for coaches and staff so that they are prepared to respond to a spine injury. Coach players to use methods of blocking and tackling that do not use the head as a "battering ram." Arrange for a physician to be on the field during practice or a game in case of emergencies. Make sure that helmets are well-fitted and that straps are tight.
Officials: Continue to enforce penalties against helmet-to-helmet contact.
Players: Focus on keeping the head up, even when blocking and tackling. Trainers should work with players to strengthen neck muscles so that they can maintain proper posture during the game. Players need to immediately report "warning signs" of an injury (such as numbness or tingling, pain or pressure in the head/neck/back, weakness or uncoordination, and difficulty breathing) - and should not return to the game.

Measures can also be taken to prevent cheer leading injuries. Experts suggest improving the facilities where stunts are performed (for example, requiring floor mats and avoiding wet surfaces), limiting the participants who can perform more dangerous stunts to those with more experience, and requiring coaches to undergo specialized safety training. It's important to note that cheer leading is not considered a sport by some schools, and thus is not as heavily-regulated as other athletics. Many have suggested that, until cheer leading is sufficiently regulated by all schools, sufficient safety improvements cannot be made.

The Dallas Cowboys Quarterback

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Dallas Cowboys Quarterback is one of the most prized positions in the whole of professional football, and one which boys across the country one day dream of filling.

The Dallas franchise has been in business for over forty years now, and during that time some exceptional players have held the starting quarterback's job. It was Don "Dandy Don" Meredith who led the Cowboys to their first winning season back in the 1960s, as Tom Landry was starting to build the team through the tough years of the early 1960s. Although he never led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl, he remains revered amongst Cowboy fans for his contribution during this time.

Roger Staubach was the Dallas Cowboys Quarterback for most of the 1970s, when they dominated the NFC. He was only picked in the 10th round of the NFL draft, and didn't even start playing pro football until five seasons later, due to his service in the military, which saw him serve voluntarily in Vietnam.

In 1971 Staubach finally took over the role of starting quarterback, at a time when the team was struggling with a barely positive record. The Cowboys finished the season with a run of ten unbroken victories, culminating in the 24-3 win over the Miami Dolphins in the Super Bowl. He was voted as the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in that Super Bowl triumph, and assured himself of a place in history.

The Dallas Cowboys Quarterback for their other period of outstanding success back in the early 1990s was Troy Aikman. Aikman was a totally different case, in that he had been drafted as the number one pick in the entire draft in 1989. At the time, Dallas was coming off a league worst 1-15 season, and later in the year they sold their star running back Herschel Walker to gain more draft picks. Within three years, it had all paid off.

Dallas went from the league's worst team to lifting the Super Bowl trophy, and Aikman played a huge part in that, being voted the Super Bowl MVP after passing for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns. When the Cowboys proved the Super Bowl win was no fluke by retaining the trophy the following year, Aikman produced a season long passing rating of 99.

The current quarterback, Tony Romo, was picked up by the Cowboys as an unsigned free agent, having not been selected in the draft. He was very nearly cut from the roster before he had had a chance to prove what he could do, but in 2006 he took over from veteran Drew Bledsoe, to some effect, winning his first starting game by 35-14.

Romo has, in this 2007 season, been given a contract extension, which will see him stay a Cowboy for a further six years. He seems pretty much assured, injuries permitting, of continuing to start games as the Dallas Cowboys Quarterback.

History of Cheerleading

The history of cheerleading originates from the United States in the late 1880's with your average crowd yelling and chanting to encourage their team. No one is quite sure how they documented that it was the first cheer ever but credit is given to Princeton University in 1884 for coming up with a Princeton cheer and marking there place in cheerleading history.

Then a few years later, the Princeton grad Tom Peebles brought cheering to the University of Minnesota. But it wasn't until 1898 that fellow University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell directed what was the very first cheer ever in November of 1898. The story is that Minnesota was having such a terrible football season that people felt the need to come up with positive chants and cheering was born. Minnesota went on to organize a male cheer squad in 1903 and organized the first cheerleading fraternity in the history of cheerleading, Gamma Sigma. Ironically enough cheerleading started out as an all male sport, it was felt there deep loud voices were more projecting than a woman's voice. It wasn't until the 1920's that women became much more involved in cheerleading and began to incorporate gymnastics, pyramids and throws. Today, youth cheerleading is predominantly made up of female cheerleaders however college cheerleading is still about fifty percent male.

Well, the students cheered all they could for Minnesota yet they still got beat. It was a student's scientific thesis that positive fan support would actually help send positive energy toward there team and assist them in winning. Well, the cheer wasn't enough to garner a win but it did create a new sport. University of Minnesota stuck with the idea and eventually began to have an organized group of cheers at every game

The evolution of cheerleading to a sport was again developed by The University of Minnesota as the women became known for there athletic ability by including gymnastics in their routines. Then in the 1930's the sport developed into much more of a display of showmanship as the athletes become much more entertaining and fun to watch. The megaphone would become the next big addition to cheerleading history in the early 1900's and the pom pom which was introduced by Lawrence Herkimer really gave cheerleading a symbol to hang its hat on.

Herkimer has to be seen as the grandfather of cheerleading. He has done so much for the history of cheerleading by founding the National Cheerleading Association at S M U and holding cheerleading schools way back in 1946 and '47. Herkimer's camps have now grown to over twenty thousand attendees.

Today the sport has evolved into a highly athletic and competitive field displaying males and females of incredible talent. Herkimer and University of Minnesota have carved out a unique history of cheerleading.

Flu Shot Permanently Disables Washington Redskins cheerleader Desiree Jennings

Woman Disabled by THIS YEARS FLU SHOT (10 days AFTER vaccination) straker-61.blogspot.com WASHINGTON, DC - A few weeks ago, Desiree Jennings was training for a half marathon. Now, she's struggling to walk, talk and even eat. According to the Loudoun Times-Mirror , Jennings, who has been working with the Washington Redskins as an ambassador in hopes of becoming a cheerleader since April, developed severe and possibly life-threatening side effects from getting a seasonal flu vaccine seven weeks ago at a Safeway in Reston. Twenty-five-year-old Jennings says she was healthy and active and was not in a high-risk group at the time of her shot. She says she received the vaccine to earn points for her work health plan that gives perks for each level of wellness that is attained. It was not until ten days after she received the shot that she began to experience flu-like symptoms. Her physical therapist at Johns Hopkins Hospital say she is suffering from dystonia, a neurological movement disorder where sustained muscle contractions cause body jerks, and abnormal or repetitive movements. People who suffer from dystonia often are required to re-learn even the most basic routines. It is a rare disease and is not completely understood. You realize your life is never going to come back the way it was, Desiree told the Times-Mirror. My goal in life was to one day be a CEO. Now, I dont know if I can ever return back to work. Are You Short Of Time?

Have you noticed how quickly time flies by these days. No sooner have have you set your New Years resolutions than the year is over. Do you ever wonder where all of your time goes? We all know that 'New Year Resolutions' are pretty ineffective and you won't be surprised to hear that I won't be advising you set any this year. However having said that, the end of one year and the beginning of a new one seems to be a natural time (along with out birthdays) that people sometimes reflect on where they are in life, and what they would like to achieve.

The problem is that most people don't do this in a structured way and usually set goals that seem important in the moment.

This may seem OK, but 'in the moment' we are all surrounded by media images of 'perfect' lives that don't exist combined with state of the art iNFLuencing and advertising techniques designed to get us to aspire to things we don't need. Most people are easy prey to this and spend far too much of their lives on the wrong side of the T. V. screen responding to short term urges manipulated by marketing professionals until they are inextricably linked to the programs people 'choose' to watch. This sort of advertising relies on the fact that most people haven't decided what is really important to them and then followed this up with a personal commitment to live to their own mission.

In fact, with the pace of modern life most people are so busy just getting by, that they don't believe they have time to plan. You really wouldn't believe the amount of emails I get from people saying they haven't had time to read the 7 chapters of Take Control. This used to really surprise me; each chapter is 1-2 pages long and takes maybe 5 minutes to read. It seems to me that, as so often in life, the people who believe they have the least time, are those that most need to take some time out to plan!

Many people choose not to take the time to set clear goals and spend most of their time reacting to the plans and priorities of others. They would love to be in control of their own lives, but they just don't have the time, maybe they have TV to watch!

Stephen Covey uses the term 'Sharpening the Saw' and this relates to the story of the woodcutter who was so busy sawing with his blunt saw, that he couldn't spare the time to sharpen his saw! If this rings any bells for you, then I wonder how much time you would save if you were to become a master of effective planning, backed up with the discipline to work the plan.

How would you reply if I were to ask you: what you want to have achieved and who you want to become in 1, 5 and 10 years? Have you even given this any serious thought?

Think of it this way, in 5 years you will arrive, the question is will you be someone who was happy to let this happen by chance? or will you be one of the few who will took the time to set clear goals and developed a plan to achieve them?

Its only by sitting down and consciously deciding what is truly important to you and how you'd like to contribute to the world, or even just those around you, that you can develop the big picture vision on how you'd like your life to turn out. Taking some time out regularly to plan and measure how you are doing could well be the 'missing' third step to taking control of your life?

As part of my training commitments between now and the end of the year I'll be reviewing my mission and goals before updating my plan for their achievement. For example I am committed to helping even more people take control of their own lives and in order to do this I will be moving increasingly into running seminars and workshops and taking Motivational speaking engagements worldwide. Make no mistake successful as I have been as a coach these things won't just happen on their own - they'll take courage, vision, commitment and planning.

My aims for telling you this are quite simple, when I meet you at seminars in the years ahead, be they in Brisbane, Auckland, London, San Francisco, Northallerton or elsewhere - you'll know not only that I walk my talk, but also if I can create my dream life, so can you - and that seems a great place for you to be at the start of a seminar.

So speaking to you as someone who is committed to personal development, I'd like to ask - If you really could have anything, what would you want in your life and who would you need to become to make this a reality?

If 20-year-old redundant welder with no useful qualifications can transform himself into 1st class honours graduate and International Life Coach, then what excuse would you use to prevent yourself becoming whatever you want in life? and please don't tell me you don't have enough time.

I've committed publicly to my vision for my future professional life and that's the last tip for today - once you've decided - go public, the best people to tell are those who'll delight in telling you you've failed - you see if you re-frame the behaviour even people who seem a pain can unknowingly become your number one cheerleader, motivating you towards even greater success and fulfillment in your life!

It's your life, choose to live it today.

Wearing the Miami Dolphins Jerseys

Miami is located in the state of Florida and has produced one of the greatest football teams in the United States. They are well known for their Super Bowl VII and VIII wins. In 1972, to the delight of their fans, they had the NFL's first and only perfect season. People who live in the Miami area are proud to be known as their fans and wear Miami Dolphins jerseys.

The team's jersey colors have not changed very much since they were first formed. The colors are aqua and orange with a navy trim, which was added in the 1997s. At the present time there are several different combinations. Home uniform is aqua jersey with white pants. The numbers are in white with orange trim. An aqua, white and orange strip is trims the pant's sides. There is a dolphin trim on the jersey's sleeve.

The road uniform is white jerseys and pants. The tops are trimmed in aqua and the strip on the pants is predominately orange with white and aqua in the stripe. The team member's number is in aqua. Their alternate uniforms are white jerseys, aqua pants; aqua jerseys and aqua pants and orange jersey, white pants. All tops have dolphin emblems on the sleeves.

It is said that the team wears white outfits for daytime home games, forcing their opponents to wear colored ones that draw the heat day's heat, causing them to perspire. It is felt this gives them an advantage because of the area's humid weather. The dolphin emblem has been changed from time to time to make it stand out better.

Copies of jerseys worn by the team are very popular with their fans. The younger crowd likes to wear them to school to show their support. Older fans are also enthusiastic to wear these jerseys and have found them comfortable while being able to express their preference for, they feel, the best football team throughout the nation.

Any collector is very enthusiastic when a well-known dolphin player's jersey is put up for sale, especially if they are autographed. A recent jersey worn and autographed by Ricky Williams, a famous dolphin player, was on the Internet and sold for over $100. Two more, worn and signed by the players, sold for over $600. These jerseys increase in value as the years go by with the older ones becoming very rare.
