What In The World Would We Do Without Music?

NFL cheerleaders

What in the world would you and I do if there was no such thing as music?

Can you imagine a world without music? No songs, no tunes, no rock, no roll, no jazz, no hymns, no boogie-woogie, no country-western, no symphonies. No singing in the shower. No whistling Dixie.

Lovers wouldn't have songs to romance to. There would be no such thing as "our song." Sinatra couldn't fly to the moon. Elvis couldn't complain about people stepping on his blue suede shoes. Tony Bennett would have to write a letter about how he left his heart in San Francisco. Willie might go on the road again, but without a guitar. And Ray Charles would look pretty strange up on stage without a piano telling us that Georgia is on his mind.

Then when the wedding day arrived, what would the bride march down the isle to? A poem? Silence? Applause? And when the happy couple marched out of the church together, would they do it to the bark of neighborhood dogs, or perhaps all the wedding guests talking at once?

And at the reception, what would they dance to? The Funky Chicken just isn't the same without music. Since rhythm is part of music, no drums would even be allowed.

And the honeymoon I suppose would take place with radio news on, or perhaps the educational channel accompanied by the drone of an air-conditioner.

When baby arrives, do we lull her to sleep with a reading from Shakespeare? Or perhaps random readings from the dictionary or encyclopedia? Could we bore her to sleep with words?

Nursery rhymes would have to be chanted or recited instead of sung. School music programs would of course be non-existent, as would school choirs and orchestras and bands. When the school football team plays, there would be no school fight song. Cheerleaders would have to cheer and dance minus any music.

And when those birthdays roll around, we would have to all recite together in a monotone "happy birthday to you."

And when duty calls, what would soldiers march to? What would take the place of music in parades, since there would be no marching bands? John Philip Sousa would have had to get a day job.

And on the 4th of July there would be no patriotic songs - just speeches. At Christmas time there would be no Christmas carols. No rousing gospel music at Easter, no hymns in church.

And can you imagine radio without music? Nothing but news and talk shows and bla bla bla bla....

I don't know about you, but I've had it up to here just thinking about it. I'm heading for the piano now to celebrate the fact that our Creator gave us the wonderful and inspiring and uplifting gift of music that we all take for granted.

I think I'll play a nursery rhyme or two, then the wedding march, then Silent Night, then Auld Lang Syne, then Fur Elise, then the blues, then a little jazz, then... and then...

Meet the 17 Hottest NFL Wives

The Hottest Wives of NFL Players this year includes a bevy of beautiful and talented women that just happen to be married or engaged to current NFL players.

Last year, Laurie Schaub, an ex-Houston Texans cheerleader and wife of quarterback Matt Schaub, won the initial Football's Hottest Wives competition. Schaub is back again this year to defend her title against the 2011-12 Sweet 17 finalists.

Schaub is one of 3 ex-NFL cheerleaders in the finals that also includes 2 models, 2 pageant winners, 3 actresses, and 3 athletes. Seven of the 17 finalists have husbands that play quarterback. The Patriots, Chargers, and Cowboys are the only teams to have 2 nominees among the Sweet 16.

Here are the Sweet 17 for Football's Hottest Wives, 2011-2012.

Laurie Schaub (Matt Schaub, QB, Houston Texans) - Laurie Schaub is the defending champion. She is an ex-Texans cheerleader and a dance instructor.

Alicia Jammer (Quentin Jammer, CB, San Diego Chargers) - Alicia Jammer finished second in last year's voting. She appeared on the Football Wives show on the E Network and is active in raising money for foster children in the San Diego area.

Julie Dorenbos (Jon Dorenbos, Long Snapper, Philadelphia Eagles) - If you thought only quarterbacks got the hottest girls, think again. Eagles Pro Bowler Jon Dorenbos is married to Julie Dorenbos - one of the early leaders of the competition.

Sasha Dindayal (Antonio Gates, TE, San Diego Chargers) - The Trinidad-born beauty has appeared as a model in several hip-hop videos.

Carrie Prejean (Kyle Boller, QB, Oakland Raiders) - Carrie Prejean was Miss California 2009 and first runner-up for Miss USA. She caused controversy during the pageant by saying that she believed that marriage should be "between a man and a woman" only.

Candice Crawford (Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys) - Candice Crawford looks a lot like Romo's ex Jessica Simpson. She is a former Miss Missouri and worked as a reporter at KDAF in Dallas. Candice's sister Chace stars on the TV hit Gossip Girl.

Kristin Cavallari (Jay Cutler, QB, Chicago Bears) - Kristin Cavallari is an actress who has appeared on Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County and The Hills. She was a contestant on the most recent Dancing with the Stars.

Evelyn Lozada (Chad Ochocinco, WR, New England Patriots) - The Latin beauty is a singer and admits to have a real shoe problem. She is the owner of an upscale shoe store Dulce in Florida. Lozada was formerly engaged to basketball star Antoine Walker.

Amanda Brown (Peyton Hillis, RB, Cleveland Browns) - Amanda Brown and the Browns running back are our freshest newlyweds coming off of a late October wedding in Arkansas.

Betina Driver (Donald Driver, WR, Green Bay Packers) - Betina is a body builder that looks like she could match up one on one with Donald-one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.

Gisele Bundchen (Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots) - Gisele Bundchen is the most famous in the bunch since Kendra Wilkinson is no longer eligible. She is a super model and a Victoria's Secret angel.

Brittany Koehl (Stephen McGee, QB, Dallas Cowboys) - With Brittany's nomination, there are two very deserving wives of Cowboys' quarterbacks in the Sweet 16.

Christy Oglevee (Chris Cooley, TE, Washington Redskins) - Christy Oglevee is an ex-Redskins cheerleader.

Heather Mitts (A.J. Feeley, QB, St. Louis Rams) - Heather Mitts is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in soccer. She was named ESPN's Sexiest female athlete in 2004 and appeared in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in 2005.

Katina Taylor (Jason Taylor, OLB, Miami Dolphins) - Katina Taylor is an ex-gymnast and dance instructor who undoubtedly helped Jason on his Dancing with the Stars appearance. Katina's brother is 8-time Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas who spent most of his career with the Dolphins.

Kim Zolciak (Kroy Bierman, DE, Atlanta Falcons) - Kim Zolciak appeared on the Real Housewives of Atlanta television show.

Sanya Richards (Aaron Moss, CB, New York Giants) - Originally from Jamaica, Sanya Richards was our bronze medalist in the 2010 competition, but was a gold medalist in the 4 x 400 relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

School Event Ideas to Create School Spirit

NFL cheerleaders

Using events to generate school spirit is a great way to attract involvement from the students, faculty, and parents. There are many ways in which to inspire school spirit. Most events may revolve around the athletics associated with the school, but there are activities such as fundraisers, school gear, and competitions that can be used in place of events.

The most obvious school event to build spirit is a pep rally. This usually involves the cheerleaders and the football team, but it can also be a way for all athletics to participate. Pep rallies during the fall months could include all the fall athletic teams while the same can be done in the spring. One way to get more teams involved is to create competitions such as "land versus water" that pits the football and baseball teams against the swim and water polo teams in a non-sports contest like a trivia quiz about school traditions.

An easy event to plan is a Dress Up Day. Encourage the students to dress in school colors, let them attend class dressed up and painted. Plan a "Twins Day" where students can dress like a friend. Host a creative uniform day that lets students make modifications to their normal uniform with extra points for uniqueness. Let the students vote on the most interesting outfits.

Most schools have a store inside the school in which they sell school related items. This is a prime opportunity for non-event spirit building. Add in a variety of items that feature the school colors or emblem: t-shirts, hoodies, shorts, notebooks, book covers and window decals. For extra fun, have special items just for freshmen, seniors, etc.

Rather than a single event, designate an entire Spirit Week with a lot of activities planned. This can be coordinated with Homecoming Week, where alumni are likely to get involved. Ideas can include having Super Hero Day, Hat or Slipper Day, Flashback Day, etc. Plan a different activity every day leading up to the main event. Spirit Week can include contests between classrooms such as the best decorated door, trivial pursuit games, or which class can rack up the most points for students actually participating in Spirit Week.

Participating in fund raisers, such as Make-A-Wish, can induce a lot of student and faculty participation. Sparking contests between classrooms on who can raise the most money inspires many to empty their banks and pockets. The winning classroom can be treated to lunch at the local pizza shop or for an ice cream treat.

A great way to encourage student involvement is to have organized events such as a girls Powder Puff Football game or student/teacher events. A popular event is a Student Teacher Basketball game. This can include any teacher who wants to participate and any student, whether on the basketball team or not. Have a date and time set up for the students and community to come and enjoy the game.

Involve the principals by encouraging them to be willing to shave their heads or dye their hair a funky color if the students can accomplish a set goal. Make a big deal out of it by doing it at a pep rally for the entire student body to witness.

There are many events that can inspire school spirit. There is nothing better than seeing a stadium filled with one's school colors, that sight alone may entice more kids to participate.
