Cheerleading Injuries
Strength Training Is Part of the Solution
Last year there were 30,000 incidents of cheerleading injuries in the U.S. severe enough to require emergency room visits and treatment. This is six times greater than in 1980. From 1982 to the spring of 2008 the number of catastrophic injuries (including two deaths) suffered by high school cheerleaders in this country was 73. This is the highest number attributed to any female athletic activity. Number 2 was gymnastics with NINE. Furthermore the NCAA reported that in the 2005 stats their insurance arm spent 25% of its liability claims budget on cheerleading injuries while spending 57% on football. The number of football players covered by the NCAA is 10 times greater than the number of cheerleaders.
Clearly there is a problem here and concerned parents should be involved in the proposed solutions.
There is general agreement that cheerleading has developed into an activity that is quite different than it was 30 years ago. The movements are more acrobatic and gymnastic in nature with many moves borrowed from the discipline known as handbalancing. Apparently the practitioners are more athletic, more daring and there is a considerable motive to remain competitive between schools what with cheerleading competitions becoming stand alone activities.
Because cheerleading is not recognized as a school sport in most states (Florida being a notable exception), there is less oversight provided by the school districts and consequently many of the sponsors are merely roll book carriers with little expertise in coaching an athletic activity. What little training is available is meager and insufficient. Cheerleaders performing tumbling movements should be supervised by adults with experience in spotting as is a prerequisite for coaching gymnastics.
Moreover the people running cheerleading programs have been advised by the football community that requiring safety equipment would indicate an assumption of danger and hence liability should any claims go to litigation. Subsequently there is no oversight procedure requiring the use of safety mats or spring loaded surfaces for either practices, performances or competitions.
In all of the proposed solutions I've encountered, nowhere is strength training mentioned as a part of the answer. This is not surprising since the topic never comes up in the female athletes' torn ACL discussions.
Much of what the modern day cheerleaders are performing is very similar to the ancient art of hand balancing in which one person (the top mounter) performs acrobatic or gymnastic maneuvers while being supported by another person (the understander). Circuses used to regularly feature hand balancing acts and in fact, Burt Lancaster was a circus hand balancer before becoming an actor. Practitioners of this art used to perform strength training exercises to improve their performances and to minimize injuries. Why should cheerleaders be any different?
Not only will properly designed strength training improve the durability of the muscles and connective tissues that would lessen the severity of an injury, it would delay the onset of fatigue. Muscular fatigue late in a performance or competition may well be the cause of miscues and non-support on the part of the bottoms that lead to injuries.
A couple of training session a week of power snatches, power cleans, presses and squats should be enough to significantly improve the performance and durability of cheerleaders and head off some of the injuries and lessen the severity of others.
The movement to minimize the danger of cheerleading must include all of the aforementioned factors. Official oversight, acceptable standards of technical proficiency, sophisticated adult instruction and supervision, appropriate safety equipment and well designed strength and conditioning all figure into raising the bar of safety standards.
I'm convinced that parent booster groups will have to be the ones that lead the way on this one by getting involved with school district administration, providing input on supervisory personnel, funding safety equipment and campaigning for inclusion of cheerleading into the strength and conditioning program. I know that most strength and conditioning coaches are probably overloaded as is, but there is a disproportionate injury rate in this activity and providing services might provide some leverage for increasing the strength and conditioning program.
As a society we believe in solving problems through litigation, legislation, diplomacy, administration, education, good intentions, psychology, financing and pharmacology. Injuries happen to tissues and their component cells and molecules. Strength and conditioning professionals can improve the tissues.

Chiropractic Intervention Helps Female Athletes Avoid Injuries
Professional ball players have traditionally used chiropractic intervention to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury. Studies are prevalent showing the positive effects of chiropractic intervention in male athletes.
Now female athletes are receiving the same attention by researchers. A 2011 study in the "Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics" reported on the results of a chiropractic intervention used with professional football cheerleaders during the 2010 season. The study focused on hamstring injury prevention, a common injury among cheerleaders, gymnasts, and other female athletes.
Doctors of Chiropractic provided the study participants with a "closed-chain, eccentric hamstring exercise protocol" for the season. Hamstring injury was assessed before and after the season. The protocol consisted of two specific exercises performed with an elastic band, two to five times per week. The results showed a statistically significant difference in successfully reducing hamstring injuries and related pain in the participants.1
The study is good news for female athletes across the board, including dancers, skaters, gymnasts, runners, and others who are prone to overuse and hamstring injuries. Now, traditional, best practice methods for preventing a hamstring injury--proper strength training of the hamstring muscles to ensure that they are equally balanced with the quadriceps muscles, and ample warm-up and stretching of the muscles before beginning exercise and training--can be combined with a specific intervention protocol designed to reduce hamstring injuries in females.
Chiropractors naturally advocate taking a proactive stance. Injury prevention is much preferred to injury rehabilitation. Proactive chiropractic care not only helps reduce the risk of injuries in athletes but can also help improve strength, balance, speed, agility, and flexibility.
Chiropractors are whole body practitioners and while they may provide a site-specific training program focused on a certain area of the body, generally this is only a piece of the puzzle. Chiropractors are physicians trained to look at the biomechanics of the body as a whole. Further, Certified Chiropractic Sports Physicians (CCSP) are Doctors of Chiropractic with a special certification in treating sports injuries and optimizing physical fitness. They regularly provide integrative whole body training programs for the athletes they treat, using protocols to help minimize the risk of injury and enhance sports performance.
Athletes under the care of a chiropractor or a CCSP are typically less prone to painful, frustrating injuries and recover more quickly when they do experience an injury. And because chiropractors are natural, hands-on healers, athletes under their care are often able to avoid surgery. Heat and ice therapy, electric stimulation, ultrasound, massage, rehabilitative exercises, and mobilizations or manipulations (adjustments) can often restore balance, alignment, and proper range of motion following an injury, without the need for more invasive treatment such as surgery.
Ultimately, prevention is the best medicine.

High School Cheerleaders Embody The Meaning Of Sport
Though the football game is why they came, many of the Shenendehowa Plainsmen fans stay for the Junior Varsity (JV) cheerleaders despite the bitter cold. Fans wonder how the girls can stand the weather in their small green and white uniforms. When the group in front of the stands starts their routine, filled with gymnastics and difficult choreography, the audience forgets about the cold as they are being mesmerized by the girls being hurled into the air in front of them. These kinds of routines performed at school games won the Shen JV cheerleaders first place, and a rather large trophy, at the Ultimate Cheer Fest at Hudson Valley Community College held on January 27th. Both the JV and Varsity teams won top honors their respected divisions.
Being a cheerleader requires physical strength and endurance, just like any other athlete. The season lasts from the second week in August to the second week in March. The try-outs for the squad prove that the few girls picked will be able to handle the workload. "(It's a) long and grueling process," JV Coach Jessica Abrams said. "The first set of try-outs is for the football season. We condition the girls for two weeks, meaning you have to run a 10 minute mile, 40 pushups in 40 seconds, and 40 explosion sit-ups in 60 seconds."
This doesn't include the several other football and basketball games that the cheerleaders perform in throughout the year. In addition, the squad spends time preparing for competitions. The team tries to travel to as many competitions as possible, mostly getting through to local competitions, including Suburban Council. "My favorite part of cheerleading is actually competition season" says Shen cheerleader Kayla St. Clair, "because the whole team has worked together to be something amazing.
When we get to competition and kick butt, we feel awesome!" In the past few years, Shen's cheerleaders have become stars in the athletic department, even though cheerleading is not considered a sport at the school. "It is most definitely a sport because we practice really hard" argues St. Clair. "It's not easy holding a girl above your head doing crazy things for over a minute. It just takes a lot of hard work and (a lot of) time to become a cheerleader and it's not what most people think it is." Abrams says that the cheerleading club advisors go through the same paces as other coaches throughout the school, helping balance the club vs. sports status with the cheerleaders. "We are overseen by the athletic department. We carry the same safety certifications as other coaches, like CPR and first aid.
We go to the same coach seminars and we meet with the athletic director (Matthew Jones) to go over the upcoming season," she said. Though the training is grueling and long, with only one day off per week, the connection between the coach and her team runs deep. "I've watched them grow. To see the tremendous amount of growth, it's incredible. It's like watching your kids grow up. So much change happens, and to see their progress as people. It's really the only reason why I do this," she said.

The NFL Draft and the Dallas Cowboys
One of the biggest days for the National Football League is upon us - the annual spring draft. The 2007 National Football League Draft will take place in New York City on April 28 and 29, 2007. As always, speculation revolves around who will be the number one draft pick for 2007. The Oakland Raiders have the first draft choice overall with the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Arizona Cardinals rounding out the top five.
This year the Dallas Cowboys have the twenty-second pick in the first round of the draft with 10 picks in all, one in each of the seven rounds as well as an extra pick in the sixth and two extra picks in the seventh due to past trades. The team is hoping that seven or eight of the drafted players will make this year's 53-man roster.
Building a team though the draft can be a hit and miss endeavor that takes skill, knowledge and some luck. Since their entrance into the NFL, as an expansion team in 1960, the Dallas Cowboys have done more than all right by the draft. They have consistently demonstrated an ability to choose talent in the draft which blossoms into a full-fledged all-star.
From their first participation in the NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys have had success. The first ever draft pick in Dallas Cowboys franchise history was made in 1961 when the team chose, out of Texas Christian University, star defensive tackle and first draft pick overall Bob Lilly. Known affectionately as "Mr. Cowboy", Lilly was the first Cowboys Ring of Honor recepient at Texas Stadium.
Selected by the Dallas Cowboys, Ed "Too Tall" Jones, out of the Tennessee State University, was the number one overall draft pick of the 1970 NFL draft. Jones had a successful career with the team as a defensive end and was named the NFL Defensive MVP in 1982. He is one of only three players to have played for the Dallas Cowboys franchise for fifteen years.
In 1977 the Cowboys selected, second overall, running back Tony Dorsett from the University of Pittsburgh. Dorsett made an instant impression in his first year, finishing with Rookie of the Year honors and a Super Bowl Championship. The success continued as Dorsett went on to rush for over 1000 yards in eight of his first nine seasons (missing the mark in 1982, due only to a strike-shortened season). He was elected to both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.
The Cowboys again found great success when in the 1988 draft, out of the University of Miami, they chose Michael Irvin 11th overall in the first round of the 1988 draft. Irvin spent his whole career with the Cowboys and is regarded as one of the best wide receivers ever in the National Football League. He is also the only player in Dallas Cowboys history to have the distinction of having played for each of the first four coaches of the team - Landry, Johnson, Switzer and Gailey.
In 1989, with the first pick in the draft, the Dallas Cowboys chose the projected no. 1 overall pick, UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman. Despite a slow start Aikman went on to lead the team to three Super Bowl Championships and was inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor as well as the Pro Football Hall of Fame
With the 17th overall draft pick in1990, the Dallas Cowboys chose running back Emmitt Smith out of the University of Florida. Smith would prove to be yet another outstanding selection for Cowboys football as he went on to set countless records with the team. He currently holds the NFL record in career rushing yards of 18,355 and is the only player in NFL history to rush for over 18,000 yards.
Through the years the Dallas Cowboys have picked wisely in the NFL draft and have had great success in choosing players who have gone on to become not only NFL all-stars but Dallas Cowboys legends as well. The team and their fans fondly remember all of these past players as is evident by the endless memorabilia available dallas-cowboys-apparel.com for these legends and all Dallas Cowboys fan favorite players.
Soon the speculation over who the number one overall pick in the 2007 National Football League Draft will be will come to an end as the player's name is announced in New York on April 28, 2007. It is a given that the Dallas Cowboys have done their homework and are prepared to choose with careful consideration each of their ten draft picks. There is little doubt that some of the talents they draft will go on to become NFL all-stars and Dallas Cowboys legends.

Fundraising ideas for your football team
Football clubs must all have a variety of fundraising activities to pay salaries to the players and the maintenance and improvement of their facilities for help. Fund raising can be as simple as creating a pool of enthusiastic partners on a regular monthly football soccer contest or sweepstakes. For lotteries and competitions with local authorities, both in the guidelines, when they are released. The license may be required.
Other football teamFundraising ideas are "Football Night Out." This may be a repetition of a video from games already played, or participate in a personality or favorite players of the football club. To this end, a lot of publicity before the of the event, tickets must apply for and, of course, before the effective date of the event to collect donations and a good visit in the night to be sold.
Another good idea is to book a bus to a football game. The charge for the fans would also increase the costthe bus, tickets to the game and various other expenses. Sponsor a contest or offer to do football, perhaps for a local cheerleading squad.
Another valuable source of income is sponsorship from local businesses in the form of paid advertising, or perhaps to receive promotional items. For companies that sponsor these events offer, do not forget a balloon of paper with the logo as a gift for participating, or sell them as part of a fundIncreasing competition winning price. These memories make great contest and winners. They are also a great way to market a company name, products and services.
Take advantage of help for fundraising donations from local suppliers for a fund-raising activities of the football club.

A recipe for success in 2010 - cheerleader or coach, you decide
I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine. We were a topic of sermon that his pastor had shared with them the night before speaking. The message contains an element that I found very interesting. The message was the theme to inspire people to start looking, even in environments where people with which they are connected by a group of people cheering from the sidelines of life (cheerleaders) were in people who would change would bePosition with the aim of being COACH life. He also proposes to issue a cheerleading coach and win some. I agree with his position on the belief that our connections with people and network and affiliate ourselves with a very important element to have our own individual life successes. I also started thinking about when I became a life and business coach has a lot of speculation about this, what exactly is that I have emerged. So in this postI answer two questions: What is coaching? And because we approach the year 2010 is the way to go coach?
When you hear the "coach" word, what comes first to mind? Do you have pictures of a basketball team with a man / woman shouting directions? Or perhaps a football team with a man / woman pacing back and forth and shouting the names of the players?
Coaching is no longer reserved to sports teams, is now one of the key concepts in leadership, management and staffDevelopment.
That's why you need a coach ...
# 1 coaching levels the playing field.
I noticed that there are many people who are very competent and well motivated to achieve their dreams and desires, but usually absent in setting and achieving long-term goals to live their dreams. Coaching empowers women to succeed, things.
# 2 It promotes the excellence of individual and team coaching
The development of a spirit of excellence is an important element in a successful life.Working with a coach helps you build confidence and increase skills, assessing the strengths and weaknesses, and you have the possibility of a strategic plan for your spiritual and professional development to create.
# 3 Coaching is a valuable guide.
Model to follow is important in coaching and important to me. Coaching as a leader, I also need to be able, with the trials of my life that I have to prove to a lifestyle that you are organized, Ihave the ability to communicate openly and are also very competent in my field. My gift to teach me the opportunity, the same ideas and concepts, which allows me in the area that I need and then share these gains are able to communicate with you.
Because we are approaching 2010, coach the way to go?
I think many of us women who have sufficiently prepared will, in the new year presents many opportunities. The opportunities for the callvery important decisions to be taken. Care as a woman of faith who work with those who help, inspire and empower to live your dream would be the best decision before you can do for the new year! So my call to action is. GET A COACH!

Do You Really Want to First Row Chiefs tickets?
Front row tickets to the heads of the lower floor of the Arrowhead Stadium! It seems every fan's dream come true. While the first row of seats are a treat, are not always the right choice for everyone. Let's look at some of the pros and cons to see KC football from one row to search for.
The professionals of Front Row Tickets Chiefs
There are some very interesting features which can be found in the field.
First, the pre-match verya different experience. Warm-up and celebrations take on a new dimension where you play in front of you.
Secondly, there is the possibility of being in the eye of a hurricane. Arrowhead Stadium is the NFL's strongest well-known and there is no better way to enter the Great atmosphere, like to enjoy sitting on the bottom line of the lower bowl. You really understand why the amount is to defend the twelfth man!
Third, it provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity Experience the intensity and athleticism of NFL football. You hear the grunts, groans, screams and breaking pads of the players. You really feel like part of the action when you are in the front row.
Fourth, the bottom line is traditionally associated with high rollers and VIPs. There may be an opportunity to experience the status of the Bigshot and elbows with others who have the same rub.
Fifth, if you've always wanted to have a good look at Chiefs> Cheerleaders, there is no better place in the world!
The disadvantages of Front Row Tickets Chiefs
While it is difficult to overcome the positive aspects of the first row of seats, there are some things you should know about.
First, if you're across the field, not the larger view on the opposite side. The bottom line, of course, weigh with the maintenance of a broader perspective. The view is not affected dramatically, and there are electron-jumbo to help at both ends, butis something to consider.
Secondly, if you worry about rain, you might be happier with fewer seats, which are above the thirtieth episode. This is possible with a lid, as the club swings up the lower bowl. If you're right on the field, it is completely exposed to the weather!
Overall, the first series a great opportunity for business leaders, NFL football and occurs in a different way, like most fans. Do you have anyDisadvantages, but they are in balance is a good option for most fans.
