Gogo Boots - A Time Honored Classic

Gogo boots are not just a 60s throw back. The stylish boots have enjoyed something of a rebirth in recent years, with a few updates for modern looks, of course. The term "gogo" is derived from the French "à gogo" which is a modern expression meaning 'abundance' and taken from "la gogue," meaning happiness. The term was first applied to dancers in the mid sixties, but was later applied to the boot style commonly worn by those same dancers.

Characterized by knee high height and low or flat heels, these shoes were favored in the 60's for their accentuating affect on the wearer's legs. Coupled with micro minis, the boots helped to highlight a woman's leg which had previously been covered to below the knee. Gogo boots were also the first incarnation of fashionable boots as opposed to functional boots for riding or working activities. Until the 60's, boots were something women wore to work around the farm or in the city during snow or rain. Now they are everyday footwear.

While white plastic or leather gogo boots were a hit in the United States, a similar trend took hold in England. Black kink boots became popular and were almost exact opposite of the gogo. While stereotypically white, kink boots were black. Gogo boots had low or flat heels and squared toes, kink boots had spiked heels and pointy toes. The two fashion trends helped usher in the boot as everyday footwear that modern women currently enjoy.

Gogo boots inspired many of today's modern boot styles. However, the term gogo is normally only used to describe knee high boots worn with short bottoms such as skirts or shorts. Many of today's knee high fashion boots began from the simple gogo or kink styles. The traditional gogo boot, however, can still be found in modern times. In fact, many NFL cheerleading squads include versions as part of their uniform.

Today's retro fashion trends have brought back the popularity of traditional gogo boots. However, white is no longer the stereotypical color. Browns, blacks, and other earth tone colors are popular, especially coupled with gauchos, denim mini skirts, Capri pants, and some styles of shorts. Today's boots bear a striking resemblance to cropped riding boots common in English riding stables. However, even the traditional white gogo boots have enjoyed something of a comeback, showing on the feet of some of today's top celebrities.

A New Place to Call Home for the Cowboys - Arlington, Texas

The NFL Dallas Cowboys have been at the forefront of the League for more than forty years. They have consistently been a force on the field and are considered to be the most valuable sports franchise in North America. The Cowboys joined the league as an expansion team in 1960 and called the Cotton Bowl home for the following decade. Since 1971 the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have called Texas Stadium, a purpose built stadium, in Irving, Texas, home. All that will change in 2009 when Cowboys football moves to a new stadium in the city of Arlington, Texas. The city of Arlington founded in 1875, was named after General Robert E. Lee's Arlington House, Arlington County, Virginia. In 1876 the railroad arrived and in 1884 the city was incorporated. Thriving as a result of cotton gins and farming, by 1910 Arlington was a city that boasted water, electricity natural gas, a telephone system and a public school system. Prior to World War II the population of Arlington was over four thousand. Post World War II the city underwent a major boom starting in 1954 with the arrival of a General Motors assembly plant. From 1950 through to 1990 the automotive and aerospace development lead to a major population growth in Arlington

Arlington, Texas, located in Tarrant County within the metropolitan area of Dallas-Fort Worth has a population today of over 350,000 and is the seventh largest city in Dallas.

Besides the automotive and aerospace industry, Arlington became home to the Six Flags Over Texas Theme Park in 1961, the oldest park of the Six Flags amusement parks and theme parks chain. Arlington is also home to three post-secondary institutions: the University of Texas at Arlington (the third largest institution of the University of Texas System), the Southeast Campus of Tarrant County College and Arlington Baptist College. Arlington is a sports oriented city. In 1972 the Washington Senators baseball team relocated to Arlington where they play as the Texas Rangers. And, of course, 2009 will mark the Dallas Cowboys move to Arlington and the opening of the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium. As well, like the rest of Texas, Friday night high school football in Arlington is an obsession with five high schools in the city keeping the fans entertained on Friday nights. The future home of the Cowboys in Arlington was cemented in November 2004 when city residents voted to approve a tax increase to fund the $325 million public funding portion of the stadium project. In 2005, the final site for the stadium in Arlington was chosen and in 2006 excavation at the site began. The original cost of the stadium was estimated at $650 million. Today the estimated cost is in excess of $1 billion potentially making it one of the most expensive sports venues ever to be built. The city of Arlington has been prosperous over the year's thanks in large part to its automotive and aerospace industry. The city will no doubt continue to prosper and will no doubt be forever changed in 2009 with the arrival of, arguably its most famous occupants to date, the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and all the team's future football card players. Arlington, Texas can now claim a piece of Dallas Cowboys history.

Baseball At Its Best...Los Guerreros de Oaxaca

Where else but in Mexico can you park two blocks away from the ballpark, buy a pair of field level seats beside the dugout, eat a personal size pizza, have a beer, pastry, lollipop and tic-tacs, and be entertained for more than three hours during a warm, breezy evening, all for about $15 USD.
The Mexican baseball season begins each March, with Oaxaca's team (the Guerreros, being one of 16 in this two division league) playing its games at the Lic. Eduardo Vasconcelos stadium, a short walk from downtown. When my wife and I attended our first game ever, we were thoroughly impressed, not without noting some both interesting and amusing differences as compared to attending Skydome (now known as The Rogers Centre) to see the Toronto Blue Jays. I preface my comments by indicating that the league is equivalent to Triple A, meaning that the quality of play is extremely good, with potential and former Major Leaguers on the teams...in 2005 the Guerreros had Felix Jose, former quality batter for the Cardinals in the early 90's.

I attended at the park to buy tickets a couple of days in advance of the scheduled game, wanting to ensure that I got premium seats, only to be told that tickets go on sale at 4 pm, game day. To my surprise, the ticket wicket opened shortly before the hour. My wife asked for a pair of "the best". When she returned to the car, I noticed that the 55 peso tickets did not appear to be in sequence, so I sent her back to inquire, and exchange the seats if necessary. I was right...one seat was a row above the other. Who knew that when you ask to buy a pair of tickets, you should stipulate that you want them beside each other? The attendee gave my wife a hard time, but finally relented and exchanged the seats.

We returned to the park for the 7:30 opening pitch, easily finding a parking space on the street...no $20 charge to park in a lot. But where exactly were our seats? We asked no less than four stadium employees, no one being able to point us to our seats, until finally someone took the effort to direct us appropriately. WOW. Not only field level beside the visitors' (Mexico City) dugout, but covered in the unlikely event of a drizzle, and alongside the bull pen.

The game followed the typical AL format, with designated hitter (Felix Jose for the Guerreros), and the announcer doing the same job as his counterpart in the Majors, not without prefacing each upcoming batter's name and position with an advertisement for one of the numerous sponsors whose presence is up front and center, both on the players' uniforms and across the field walls. The scoreboard provided no surprises, but it took a while to figure out some of the positions of the players by merely seeing the letter designations...no problem with SS, 1B, 2B and 3B. But what about JI, CF and JD? I thought I had it down pat with the Center Fielder, but the other two threw me off. Then the announcer introduced the Right Fielder, the Jardinero Derecho (JD), which literally translates to "Right Gardener". It made sense after a moment since he does tend to the grass in right field...but why is the Center Fielder's position not similarly adapted to the Mexican style of designation? All fell into place in short order, with each player having a number on his jersey, but with VOLKSWAGEN being the only name appearing on the backs.

The ten cheerleaders were a pleasant surprise, doing an admirable job, albeit neither choreographed nor synchronized as well as in the NFL or NBA. However, what a treat to see these young women at the ballpark with a bit of flesh on their bodies, instead of the anorectic look which we have become accustomed to see and regretfully accept north of the border. The music on the audio system was a unique mix of what one finds at MLB and NHL games with the standard "CHARGE" preambles and the like, traditional Oaxacan tunes including the Pinotepa, and well-known American and Canadian numbers by artists such as M.C. Hammer and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The fifth inning cleaning crew did their job, although without the Lone Ranger theme song to egg them on; there was the traditional on-field contest for the kids; and hawkers prevailed upon us to buy raffle tickets.

While I must confess that while baseball is the most boring of the main North American spectator sports (the list in descending order being basketball, hockey, football, soccer and baseball), since the gradual changeover in Major League ballparks to permitting the consumption of alcoholic beverages I've come to enjoy getting out to the game from time to time to chat with a friend or business associate, soak up some rays and fresh air (when the retractable dome in Toronto has been left open), and have a beer and my fill of dogs, doughnuts and deliciously rich ice cream bars. Pigging out Oaxacan style proved to be similarly orgasmic, although not being able to imbibe a mezcalito or three does put a damper on the libido. There was the tempting taco stand a few steps from our seats, in addition to the customary vendors winding their way through the stands. The range of fare includes, naturally Corona, soft drinks, hot tacos by the plastic and foil wrapped plateful, warm personal size boxed Domino's Hawaiian pizza with all the ketchup packages you want, a wide variety of cellophane packaged nuts, seeds and dried fruit colorfully presented on a display card, esquites (piping hot large corn kernels in a Styrofoam cup topped with mayonnaise, chili powder, lime and grated cheese), as well as the typical street corner stand items including gum, chocolates, hard candies and cigarettes.

Perhaps the greatest similarity to attending an MLB game was that the home team lost... just like in Toronto after the two aberrations in the early 90's. While I wouldn't expect that attending a Guerreros game would be on a list of priorities for tourists spending only a week in the city, for both residents and travelers vacationing here for longer stays baseball in Oaxaca provides an entertaining and relaxing way to spend a few hours. The regular season runs through the end of July, with the four playoff series beginning thereafter, running through the beginning of September. You can attend at the stadium to learn more about the promotions including T-Shirt and Cap days, and Mothers Day and Fathers Day.

How to Get a Sports Scholarship

Getting paid to study at college, with the main requirement being that you commit to playing sports as often as possible is the dream of many high school students, and also the dream of many parents who'd otherwise have to spend huge sums of money getting their child educated.

Every college campus has a select few sport stars who sometimes command celebrity status on the playing fields, are popular students and enjoy college without financial pressures or any obligation to earn an especially high GPA. These students are there because they got a sports scholarship.

If you are a talented sports player then it's essential to participate in your high school team. Your sports coach is probably well-connected with talent scouts from colleges who may monitor your practices when looking for suitable candidates for sports scholarships.

Sports scholarships are awarded for all types of sports, not just team sports such as soccer, football and baseball. They are actually surprisingly common but also very competitive. If you are truly an outstanding sports star then you have a huge advantage over most competitors already - but if you have obvious potential it is certainly worthwhile getting extra coaching and training as soon as possible to increase your chances of gaining an award.

For those of you skilled but not the high school star, more modest scholarships are also available. These won't cover your entire college education but may lessen the burden on you bank balance anyway.

No matter how skilled you might be at a sport, the chances of you ever building a career from it are very slight. There' s a constant risk of injuries that might end your career before it even begins and therefore sports scholarships should not be seen as a route to professional sporting success. On the contrary; a skilled athlete should invest in an academic education purely to protect themselves from the dangers of never making it as a professional athlete. Educational scholarships offer a safety net for students and you are encouraged to study an alternative discipline as well as practice your sports.

Try to get involved in the Olympic Development Program. This program offers additional sports coaching and will increase your chances of getting a sports scholarship. You should also enroll in local and national teams if possible.

Sports scholarships are an excellent way of paying for, or subsidizing the cost of a college education. They are not easy to get unless you are a skilled sports star already but they are certainly worth the effort of applying. Spend time discussing your options with your school and club coaches as they will be experienced in how best to get offered a sports scholarship.

If you are unfortunate not to be granted a sports scholarship there are however many additional ways to receive money to pay for your further education.

Carsen @ Halftime of the Cards Game.MPG

My daughter Carsen for the 3rd straight year got to perform with the Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders during an NFL Football Game. She was one of only five girls (of the 175 that performed) that has been with the program since they started it. Her mom and I get this for her birthday every year, because it is something she can't break, lose, or get a stain on it! :-) Plus she loves it, and makes some really great friends!

Five Ways to Please Your Wedding Shy Man

Men and weddings don't mix. It is akin to going to the doctor for a complete physical. We do it, but we are not comfortable doing it. We want to, but we don't like to. If it were up to us, the wedding would take place during the halftime activities during the playoffs. (The Super bowl is off limits. Do not push your luck.) We would stand to say "I Do." Being careful not to spill the chips and the bridesmaids main function would be to fetch us another beer. Here are five tips that will get your future husband off the couch and onto the wedding playing field.

August through January is off-limits. Football season is no time to plan a wedding. If you want your man to be completely focused on you and the wedding planning process, keep that wedding in the months that do not have football. By the way, the draft counts. (April) You will have our undivided attention during May, June, and July, which is when most weddings occur anyway.

Another great idea that will make your special guy especially happy about getting up early on Sunday and putting on a monkey-suit is to theme your reception around his favorite sport. Dress those bridesmaids in cheerleader uniforms and have them cheer you on. The officiant could announce, and you and your dad could trot onto the playing field, that is to say, down the aisle and to the alter, waving, psyched and ready to wed. A couple of strategically placed big screen TV's playing last years Super Bowl would cap off a perfect ceremony.

At the reception, it does not take a caterer to provide chips, dip, and beer to the happy guests as they watch the highlight reel of your wedding. A nice marching band in his old school colors would provide some excellent entertainment and while we are at it, why not have a nice game of tackle football with the bridesmaids against the groomsmen. The groomsmen claim shirts so the bridesmaids are skins.

Speaking of food and on a more serious noet, why not have Hooter's cater the wedding with hot and spicy chicken wings, foot long subs and a couple of kegs of the coldest beer this side of the Rockies? Nothing says I love you like a wedding cake made in the shape of the Lombardi trophy. With this kind of catering concept you could use that money you shave off of your wedding budget to obtain season tickets to the local football franchises home games.

Finally, why go through all the trouble of dressing up in that expensive wedding attire when you could just as easily rent a nice set of uniforms. Shoulder pads and cups are easier to put on than some of those wedding clothes and when you are done, you do not have to worry about getting them back to the tuxedo store on time. You would probably save a ton of money as well. (Can you say fifty-yard line?) If there is an earthquake and the building collapses, you would stand a much better chance of coming out of it injury free. Do not be sidelined by a traditional wedding when you could have a great themed wedding. If you go the whole nine yards and put on an NFL wedding halftime show, you are sure to have one happy groom.

3 Biz-Marketing Lessons to Learn From Attending an NFL Game

Over the years I've attended my share of live sporting events, but I must say there's a lot to like about live NFL games. In fact, I'd like to share 3 of those lessons below that you too can use to build your business.

1. Know what business you're REALLY in. Think the NFL is just about football? Think again. The NFL is in the entertainment business and yes the NFL is well aware of that.

At least for the Arizona Cardinals (it might be different at other stadiums) but along with the cheerleaders and a big red bird running around, they also have lots of scheduled little skits throughout the game. Considering how many commercial breaks you sit through when you watch a game on TV, it's remarkable how little downtime there is during a live game.

So, what business are YOU really in? And chances are, you're NOT in the business you think you're in. For instance, you may think you're a coach and you're in the coaching business, but truly, do your clients really want a coach? No. They want the results they're getting from your coaching. (Think about it, people are busy enough, do you think they really want to carve out the time each week or month to talk to you? They're doing it because they see the value and are getting the results. They're certainly not doing it because they have an extra hour laying around they don't know what to do with.)

Focus on what business you're really in, and you'll have a much easier time attracting clients.

2. You can't bore anyone into buying your products or services. Now, I agree the NFL has it a little easier since they're in the entertainment business. But what about you?

I'm not saying you need to dress up in a red bird costume and run around acting silly. But you do need to be at the very least interesting to your ideal clients so they want to stick around and listen to what you have to say. If you bore them, they won't be sticking around.

What can you do to more interesting (or, better yet, entertaining) in your marketing?

3. Pay attention to the little things. Again, this just might be Phoenix, but I must say this city has it together when it comes to moving large numbers of people around. (I also experienced this during my marathon participations.) I'm amazed at how fast you get in and out of the games and the parking lots. (They even set up a row of additional bathrooms next to the parking lot in case you didn't want to wait in line inside the stadium.)

While that may seem like a small thing -- after all, you're not going to a game because it's easy to park -- it really does add to the whole experience. How nice it is to know you can attend a game without being stuck in traffic for hours having to go to the bathroom.

So what "little" things can you offer your clients? What intangibles can you give them that seem small but make a big difference? Maybe you have some great forms or templates you can gift them. Or maybe you attract a wonderful community and you allow your clients to network with each other.

Think about some things you can offer your clients that don't cost you much in time or money but can really make a difference in how they feel about working with you.

Crazy Ray - The Biggest Dallas Cowboys Fan of All-Time Passes

The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League are a much-loved team within the borders of Texas, and far beyond. For more than forty years the team has entertained their fans while performing at a consistently high level. In addition to their great success on the field, "America's Team" has been just as successful off the field and is considered to be one of the most valuable sports teams in North America. Behind every great sports franchise are the fans that support the team, no matter what. The Dallas Cowboys have had countless fans cheering them on over the past four decades, not to mention their own world famous Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and team mascot, Rowdy. However, among all those that cheer for Cowboys football, one fan stands alone. That fan is the late Wilford "Crazy Ray" Jones.

Sadly on March 17, 2007, in Dallas, Texas, Wilford Jones' cheering voice was silenced for the last time after enduring a decade of poor health including diabetes and congestive heart failure. He was 76. Known as the original, unofficial mascot of the Dallas Cowboys, Crazy Ray entertained generations of Cowboys fans. Over the years he became as recognizable a symbol for Cowboys football as the Dallas Cowboys logo, the lone star. Fueled by Crazy Ray's passion for his team, countless fans proudly wear Dallas Cowboys apparel so that they too can show their true colours.

Crazy Ray attended the first home game of the new Dallas Cowboys franchise in 1960. His real attachment with the team began in 1962 when he started selling pennants at the Cowboys home games. Outfitted in western attire, complete with chaps, six shooters in his holsters, a vest and cowboy hat, he entertained the fans from the side lines with magic tricks, galloping on a hobbyhorse and other antics. His trademark whistle, a high pitched shrill, was also well known and earned him the nickname "Whistling Ray".

Crazy Ray is said to have missed only three Cowboys home games in the team's forty-seven years of existence. Indeed, Crazy Ray is such an integral part of Dallas Cowboys history that he has a place of honor in the fan section of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Although Crazy Ray never officially worked for the Cowboys franchise he was provided with a special parking pass and granted unlimited access to Texas Stadium for all home games.

Jerry Jones, the owners of the Dallas Cowboys in passing along condolences to the family stated, "This is a sad day for anyone who is a follower of the Dallas Cowboys. Ray was the most dedicated, entertaining and passionate of Cowboys fans. He touched thousands of lives and generations of football fans. He will remain an important part of this team's heritage and family".

Wilford "Crazy Ray" Jones was one of those people who come along every now and again. He dedicated his life to his team and touched the lives of countless Cowboys fans and football fans the world over. He will always be remembered for his spirit and love of the game. There is little doubt that the memory of Crazy Ray will live on in the hearts of Dallas fans and football fans everywhere as well as the Dallas Cowboys franchise.

What Do Cowboys-n-Campfires Have in Common?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I bet you're wondering where the heck this articles going. After all what could cowboys-n-campfires have in common? Well lots actually!

Cowboys are full of wonderful tales from their travels and their work. Campfires are a wonderful place to listen to tales whether from a cowboy or shared among a group of friends over an ice cold beer and a star filled sky.

There's another commonality. In earlier times cowboys spent a great deal of time sleeping under the clear star filled skies. They enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the universe as they stopped to rest for their night from a long day of moving cattle across the country.

Today campfires are one of the few times we get to appreciate the dark night skies with the twinkling stars. It's one of the few times we stop and appreciate what a wonderful universe we live in. In the city most of the beauty of the night sky is washed out by the ambient light.

Cowboys-n-campfires share something else - the big C. Now I bet your wondering what the heck the big C is? The big C stands for a few things Character, Charm, Cause, Caution, Cheerful, and Chatting.

Both a cowboy and a campfire have character and charm. Depending on the mood of both determines what part of their character we see. A cowboy can be angry but so can a campfire. I'm sure you've heard your fire sizzling and popping. A cowboy can be charming and so can your campfire. Remember sitting beside it watching the gentle orange and red flames flutter - so charming.

A cowboy and a campfire both have a cause. The cowboys job is to herd the cattle from point a to point b. The campfires job is to help you relax and to keep you warm. It's also their to cook a meal, prepare a pot of coffee, or enjoy a marshmallow or two.

A cowboy and campfire share caution. A cowboy needs to exercise caution when he herds the cattle. There are many dangers he will face. A campfire requires your attention and caution as there are many dangers it can cause. A fire can burn someone, and it can spread and cause a forest fire if not properly put out.

A cowboy and campfire are both cheerful. A cowboy can be heard whistling a happy tune as he carries out his duties. He always seems to have a smile on his face. Next time you go by a campfire take note of the mood of the people around it. Cheerful of course! As they all relax and share good conversation and good friends.

Cowboys and campfires share chatting. Cowboys chat among themselves as they carry out their duties. They even chat with their old friend their dog, and now and then you'll hear them chatting to the herd. The campfire is the ultimate place to relax and chat with both old and new friends. It's a place to enjoy great conversation.

So you see cowboys-n-campfires have a lot in common! Be sure to check them both out sometime soon!
