Playing For Pizza Written by John Grisham

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Rick Dockery was an NFL quarterback, or so it said in newspapers that dared mention his name! Rick had attempted passes while under contract, usually a short contract, for several NFL teams until he was finally relegated to third-string and the last possible quarterback any team wanted to use. He loved the game but his fame was from his interceptions, not the completions, which hurt many teams. The book opens with Rick in a hospital bed after being knocked senseless in his last game. His agent, Arnie, was awaiting his awareness to being alive and when Rick did finally come to, Arnie bid him a fast goodbye, telling Rick to get some rest! Arnie was tired of teams calling him telling him not to peddle Rick to them. They all knew him too well.

After regaining some of his wellness, Rick contacted Arnie requesting a chance at playing for another team. Poor Arnie. Rick kept bothering Arnie as he got more impatient regarding getting back to work and making some money. No NFL team would touch Rick. At last Arnie came up with a position for Rick in Parma, Italy playing for their NFL Italy League. Parma, Italy? Where they make Parmesan Cheese? When told of the tiny salary he would earn especially compared to the actual NFL, Rick balked but Arnie said that was all he could get for Rick. Risk had visions of being a star in this Italian league, making out with cheerleaders, and living a life of luxury that, in his mind, he had earned.

Rick's arrival in Parma was a real culture shock. No big hotels to live in, no cheerleaders, no fancy restaurants, in fact, no luxury at all and, worst of all, only three players on the entire team were paid while the others played for the fun and thrill of the game. While Rick was making $2,000.00 a month plus room and board, this was not what he envisioned. He found a few women that he "worked" on and they came and went in his Italian life. The practices were brutal for an NFL quarterback. Other team positions had to work very hard in the NFL but not the quarterbacks. They could take it easy. Sure they could-but not in NFL Italy.

He got to know the players that were on the Parma Panthers who worked in all types of jobs regularly. Come practice and game day, these players were generally 100% hard guts for Parma through pain and injuries and all types of playing surfaces and field sizes that differed throughout the league. The Panthers started their season well but went downhill when they played against the teams they knew they could beat easily. Bergamo had been the Italian Super Bowl champs for so many years that no one remembered when they hadn't won it. Of course the Panthers wanted in the worst way to win that Super Bowl and beat that great Bergamo team.

Plying for Pizza is a great variation of Grisham's normal books. He can take almost any subject and, with his knowledge and smarts, can turn it into a great story containing humor, mystery, love, and almost any other subject into a great read. I look forward to his next serious book but this one very much entertained me; most of John Grisham's fans should enjoy it too.

Set Goals! You Can't Be Successful If You Don't Define What That Means

Remember when you were a kid and your parents told you that you could do anything you set your mind to ... even if you wanted to become the president of the United States?

I do!

I can almost feel the same excitement I felt when they told me. I was excited to one day play in the NBA the NFL and I'd also be an all star pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. If someone would have asked me if I truly believed that I could accomplish all those things I would have said, "Of course I can, my parents told me I could do anything if I set my mind to it!"

What was it that you wanted to accomplish?

Did you want to be the president of the United States, the most successful lawyer in your town, a doctor, or an incredibly successful business person?

It doesn't really matter what you wanted to be back then or if you even achieved any of these things. The point is you had an incredible amount of faith that it could happen back then because the world hadn't told you "NO" enough, and you truly believed anything was possible.

One of my best friends growing up was Matt Severance. I used to spend the night at his house quite a bit on the weekends. We would sit at his house and talk on the phone to girls all evening long but, every couple hours he would hang up and watch sports center.

I used to get annoyed because it was the same show over and over with the exact same content. Matt didn't care. He told me one day he was going to be a sports writer for a newspaper. He absolutely believed that was what he was going to be and he began taking the actions required to accomplish this feat.

Well ... he did it!

Let's fast forward a decade or three and take a look at where you are today. How many times have you found yourself saying the following?

"I wish I was making more money!"

or

"One of these days I am going to start a business, or get a new job"

or

"I am going to start a diet tomorrow and I'll lose this over-sized behind."

As we get older and enough people laugh at us, tell us "NO", or tell us there is no way we can do that ... we begin to give up. Well, at least most people do!

The most successful people in this world NEVER STOP BELIEVING they can accomplish anything. Not only that. They never stop setting goals. They don't just say, "someday I'll do this or that."

Successful people define exactly what it is they are going to accomplish, they set a deadline, they put it in writing, they share it with other people, and they just plain get it done!

They don't make excuses or give up when things get difficult. They have a laser-like focus on the result they want in their life and they will do anything possible to make it a reality.

Do you know the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people?

Unsuccessful people don't take time to set goals, and if they do they don't write them down or share them with anyone else. They've basically gotten to the point where they've given up on having anymore then they have, and have bought into all the "NOs" they've heard over the years.

If you happen to be someone that isn't happy with where you are at this moment in your life, and the sentences above make you cringe at how much it sounds like you. I have some great news for you!

You can immediately change and begin to achieve great things like the most successful people achieve.

All you need to do is spend time setting goals that resemble the circumstances you'd like to receive.

Whether it is to be earning an extra $1,000 per month, or to become a millionaire in the next 3-5 years. It doesn't matter how lofty the goal is.

You simply NEED TO SET YOUR GOAL! Once you've set the goal you need to put a deadline on that goal and then take the actions necessary to achieve it.

Is it truly that simple? Yes.

Will you have obstacles? Of course!

The biggest obstacle you'll need to overcome is the fear of failing. Believe me ... that is something you absolutely can't let get in your way. You should be much more scared of living your life without accomplishing everything you've dreamed of. If you fail enough times you'll eventually succeed! Any successful person will tell you just that!

I'd love to hear examples of people you know who achieved the goals they set when they were younger and had the focus and drive to accomplish those goals just like my buddy Matt.

I'd also love it if these words have helped give you that little push and you are going to change the course of your life. If it has please leave a comment and let us all know you are going to be setting your goals and if you'd like leave what those goals are in your comment! We'll be your biggest cheerleaders! :)

A Brief History Of NFL Cheerleaders

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The history of NFL cheerleaders goes back to the 1960s when the Baltimore Colts (now the Indianapolis Colts) had formed their very own cheerleading squad. It was the first team to have an official cheerleading squad out of all the other NFL teams. A few other teams decided to have their own cheerleaders as well. NFL cheerleading was nothing like it is today but when the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders came around in their revealing outfits and dance routines, cheerleading became incredibly popular in sports entertainment.

The manager of the Dallas Cowboys knew that women could have an important role in promoting their team and their public image. He first tried to put some models out on the field for the audience. The models couldn't survive the heat during the games and turned out to be a failure in terms of entertaining the sports fans. Determined to make his idea work, the Dallas Cowboys manager thought of a brand new concept at the time. This concept was to bring athletic dancers to perform choreographed routines on the sidelines. He held auditions where women were selected for their dance skills, looks, and style. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were formed and the squad took to the field their custom-made uniforms and dance routines. The sports fans loved this and the NFL cheerleaders skyrocketed with popularity at Super Bowl X where America's millions of people sitting at home saw a glimpse of these newborn stars on television.

With their complex dance routines and pretty looks, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders created the new image of NFL cheerleaders. More NFL teams decided to take on a cheerleading squad of their own in order to increase their team's exposure to the public and media. The latest NFL cheerleading squad to be formed was the "New York Flight Crew" (formed in 2007) who cheer for the New York Jets. With this spurt in popularity, the cheerleaders made guest appearances on television shows, paid events, charity events, and also overseas performances for the US military troops. The NFL cheerleaders contributed greatly to the public image of the NFL greatly as the media began to recognize their presence.

NFL cheerleaders were no longer just dancers on the field but also participated off the field to heighten the public image of the NFL teams. Though the stereotype of cheerleaders is that of a simple-minded, dancing girl, bear in mind that they are actually contributors to the community as well as sophisticated entertainers in the field of sports entertainment.

College Football - Worst to First - Turning Around a Losing Program

Building a successful college football program requires several key ingredients. Now that the 2008 campaign has concluded for some truly awful programs, the work to build losers into winners has begun. It is appropriate now, to look at some of the significant elements required for building a winning football program. Included on this list are:

Finding enough Murray State and Western Kentucky football programs to build a schedule around, Identifying enough alumni who really believe in the institution's academic focus to give thousands of hard-earned dollars so they can be entertained on autumn Saturdays, and Figuring out a way to attract some decent athletes that are capable of constructing enough complete sentences to pass Freshman English.

Scheduling

Early pioneers of creative scheduling used to rely on sportswriters to simply pick their team as a contender for the National Championship. In years past, the Cornish Game Huskers of Nebraska routinely scheduled unbelievably weak opponents to open their season. They would fill Memorial Stadium in Lincoln with throngs of beer basted, red nosed (and clad) fans to watch the Huskers thrash teams that could hardly assemble eleven people for the kick off.

The advent of the BCS scoring system changed all that. Instead of arranging weekly massacres of poor opponents in September, the Big and Red administration had to try and bring in some quality opponents such as Southern Cal and Virginia Tech. It is bad enough that Nebraska has to face serious competition in Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas during their conference schedule. Now, that danged BCS has made the Big and Red Fans (BaRFs), actually see some real games during the harvest season.

The University of Michigan - another of the hallowed monster football programs - used to try the weak-sister scheduling method to gather steam for a national championship run. Unfortunately for them (and a blessedly for the rest of us), over the past two seasons, they scheduled in Appalachian State and the University of Utah as part of their September Patsy Parade. The really bad news for the Wolverines is that both AppState and the Utes actually showed up. In 2008, an early loss to Utah set the stage for a remarkable skid into the grey land of bowl ineligibility. Now, all the snow choked Wolverine fans have to make up a reason to go drink beer in Florida while other teams continue to play football.

The Indiana Hoosier football team didn't harbor any realistic thoughts of attending a bowl game this year, but they followed the scheduling methodology perfectly. They then hit the tank after a 2-0 start. In taking a closer look, those two early season wins against Western Kentucky and Murray State didn't actually qualify as genuine games. Still, the Hoosiers actually played the games and managed to defeat both. It just didn't prepare them for the rest of the Big Ten schedule, which quickly relegated Indiana to their usual place sweeping up the stalls at the bottom of the heap.

Alumni Relations

It has been said that to be successful as a college administrator, one must provide three things to three different constituencies. Students want sex, the faculty wants parking and alumni want winning sports. While the student interest generally takes care of itself and a modest effort can pacify the faculty demand for parking places and hook ups for electric cars, the Alumni demand is quite a bit more challenging.

Some of the more creative administrators remember that alumni were once students themselves and therefore might be more closely attuned to the student demand. That is why cheerleaders are instructed to perform in front of the alumni section as much as in front of the student cheap seats.

Free beer and chips also keep alumni pacified during losing seasons, but at some point, the administration needs to deliver either a winner on the field or provide the hope for delivering a winner. It is this last point that impacts the career of football coaches. Coaches are motivators - not only of players but of alumni as well. Players provide the muscle for on the field execution, alumni provide the funds for the weight room as well as the recruiting parties. Some of these alums attend as well.

Recruiting

A tribute to Dan Hawkins (currently coach of the Colorado Buffalos and formerly of Boise State), seems appropriate here. Motivational speaking can only accomplish so much. However, Hawkins has achieved a level of success rarely touched by others. Convincing a star pampered athlete to leave the comfortable confines of his San Diego prep school to play football on the frozen prairie wasteland of Idaho is a remarkable feat. It is so cold there that the field turned blue. Still the 'Hawk' hacked a powerhouse program out of that wilderness due to superior coaching ability and outstanding motivational skill.

Now, the University of Colorado - from its stunningly beautiful Boulder, CO campus - thinks that Hawkins should never lose another game. Unfortunately for the Buffalo Steaks, that hasn't quite panned out just yet. Still, Hawkins has had some solid recruiting success and the CU program at least appears headed in the right direction. The Buffaloes are the Sage's pick for the surprise team of 2009.

When it comes down to it, there is only so much the coaches can do to produce a winner. They have to put talented athletes on the field. Unfortunately, they have to put these same athletes in Freshman English. Have you heard some of these athletes try to give a radio interview? Ask what it is to conjugate a verb and many will just ask for the key to the restroom. Success on the field does not guarantee success in the classroom. This may be why Duke has such a problem putting a competitive team on the field. Spelling one's name correctly on the Duke entrance exam is but one requirement. Athletes need to be academically able to attend the Stanfords, Northwesterns, Notre Dames and Dukes of the football world. To these schools, the Sage sends his kudos. You can't put students in the classroom who have trouble distinguishing verb from pronoun, even if they can run 40 yards in 4.25 seconds.

There will be a number of new coaches and staffs in place for the 2009 season. Usually, season one for a new coaching staff is a disaster. Little recruiting has been done and there is no history for a star recruit to look at to help in his decision to attend. It is in these first years though, that the average viewer really learns who can coach and who can't. If you have a team made up of essentially walk-on players taking the field to play Oklahoma, you are going to find out who can motivate his team to play its best. And every now and then, you get a huge upset. That is why we keep tuning in and buying the College Football Executive Package from our cable companies. So keep an eye on Sarkisian at Washington next year...Should the Huskies win a game next year, it will be because of solid coaching and not necessarily great recruiting.

Winning football traditions bring multiple of factors together for a successful season. But it's the losers that figure out interesting ways to blow it. The Sage of College Football will be here to bring you all the fun and interesting tidbits for 2009.

The New Dallas Cowboys Football Stadium

The Dallas Cowboys New Stadium is due to open at the start of the 2009 NFL season. It will surely be one of the most impressive stadiums in world sport, seating 80,000 fans. There is an option to increase this to 100,000 in certain situations.

Although the estimated expense of the project has been way exceeded, the city has agreed to higher taxes in order to meet the extra expense, and the NFL will also be providing money as part of its policy of helping with the funding of new stadia. The stadium will also host other sporting events, including the Super Bowl in the year 2011, and the AT&T Cotton Bowl will also move to the stadium as soon as it opens.

The quest for a new stadium for the Dallas Cowboys really started back in 1994 when Jerry Jones, the franchise's owner, announced that he wanted to expand Texas stadium. The idea was to add an extra 40,000 seats, and also make the stadium an all year venue by adding a roof and air conditioning system. This would allow the stadium to be used for other events to defray expenses.

Three years after that, the Cowboys started to look at the possibility of moving to a new stadium somewhere else in the State, although the possibility of expanding Texas Stadium was still being mooted as the likely possibility.

The Dallas Cowboys New Stadium was becoming a serious possibility around the turn of the century. Although negotiations were continuing with Irving, where Texas Stadium is situated, it began to look ever more likely that the team would be on the move. At this point, serious discussions were taking place with many different cities in Texas, including Irvine itself, with the idea of finding a new location for Jones's multi purpose stadium.

Finally, following the falling apart of a deal between the Cowboys and Dallas County over finance, a deal was struck between the Cowboys and Arlington. Arlington will agree to the tax raises necessary to fund the project. The actual buying of properties to be demolished started in 2005, and work is ongoing.

Although the expenses have gone way over the original estimates, there is no doubt that the project will be completed, and the opening will happen on the scheduled date. Work began in June of 2007 on the retractable roof, which will allow for events of different types to be staged at all times of the year.

The revenue from business conventions and concerts will be needed to help pay the bills on what has been a hugely expensive project. At the start of the 2009 season, work will have been completed, and the franchise will be ready to move into the Dallas Cowboys New Stadium.

Boise State Looked Oklahoma in the Eye and Showed How Belief Makes a Winner

After checking out the list of college football bowl games, I focused on paying attention to two of the 32 games scheduled: Boise State taking on Oklahoma and Florida against Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game.

The bowl season which started on December 19 ends with Florida/Ohio State this coming Monday, January 8. When it is all said and done, 32 bowl games will be played in 21 days.

So why Boise State and Oklahoma on New Year's Day?

For openers, Boise State came into the game undefeated with a 12-0 record and was snubbed by the BCS system for a shot in the National Championship Game against Ohio State. The reason is simply that Boise State is a small Division I school and plays in what many pundits consider the substandard Western Athletic Conference.

The WAC includes Utah State, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, Idaho, Fresno State, Nevada, San Jose State and Hawaii. Boise State won the WAC title with an 8-0 record. Many die-hard football fans do not even consider the WAC a conference.

Oklahoma, on the other hand, plays in the mighty Big 12 conference which boasts such current powerhouse programs as Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Nebraska. Oklahoma won the Big 12 South championship with an 8-1 mark and came into the Fiesta Bowl with an 11-2 record.

You can imagine that Oklahoma was favored not only to take down but also slap around Boise State and its unblemished 12-0 record.

Someone forgot to tell the Boise State players not to bother showing up.

In one of the most exciting bowl games in college football history, Boise State not only led early on (21-10 at the half) but looked to put the game away until Oklahoma methodically mounted a comeback, taking a 35-28 lead with 1:02 remaining when Sooner cornerback Marcus Walker's returned an interception for a touchdown.

The Boise State Broncos subsequently found themselves at midfield with a fourth-and-18 and only 7 seconds left.

It was enough time for Boise State to pull off a jaw-dropping 50-yard pass play to Drisan James at Oklahoma's 35, and for James to lateral the ball to Jerard Rabb who raced into the end zone to tie the game at 35. It was a play the Broncos practiced all season but seldom ran.

Oklahoma's defensive secondary moved with James as his catch and run was going one way when James pitched to Rabb going the other way. The defensive secondary was out of position and could not stop Rabb from tying it up, sending the game into overtime.

The Oklahoma Sooners scored on the first play in overtime as Adrian Peterson scampered virtually untouched for 25 yards. It looked as if the game was over.

But Boise State receiver Vinny Perretta threw a fourth-down touchdown pass to Derek Schouman to put the Broncos within an extra point kick of tying it up yet again.

However, Boise State Head Coach Chris Petersen and his Bronco players decided not to give Oklahoma another chance and went for the two-point conversion and victory instead.

On the decisive last play, Broncos quarterback Jared Zabransky looked at three wide receivers to his right, pump faked, and then he handed the ball behind his back to Ian Johnson who raced untouched into the end zone for the dramatic victory.

Who would have thought to run the old Statue of Liberty play in a game this important? Answer: Boise State. Talk about a kahuna. Oklahoma could not even spell the word, much less stop Johnson on his run into Boise State history.

The final score read Boise State 43 and Oklahoma 42. There were a lot of unhappy Sooners and Sooner fans and a lot of ecstatic Broncos and Bronco fans after the amazing game-ending play.

Ian Johnson, who scored the winning two-point conversion, kept running right over to his cheerleader girl friend and proposed; she accepted and jumped into his arms. This is college football folks, not pro football which sometimes can put you to sleep on its best day.

Petersen completed his first year at Boise State undefeated at 13-0 after taking over for Dan Hawkins who left to become head coach at Colorado.

Underlying this incredible college football bowl game was the belief of the Boise State players that they could upset Oklahoma, proving once again that anything man can see and believe he can achieve.

Never, never, ever underestimate the power of belief. Clearly, the Boise State players would not have won the game as underdogs unless they believed they could win.

One of my favorite expressions is ask and you shall receive, don't and you won't.

In this case, it was believe and you shall win, don't and you won't.

Cheerleading in Professional Football - A Review

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Cheerleading in the National Football League has been around for about 50 years starting in the sixties when the Baltimore Colts established the first ever NFL cheerleading squad. Several other teams followed suit and established squads as well but it was the Dallas Cowboys that made NFL cheerleaders the ones we know today with the revealing costumes and the dance routines. It was at that time that cheerleaders became hugely popular in the NFL.

Along with the notoriety received by the cheerleading squads, we find that like most anything else, there were cheerleaders who stood out and made such an impression that they went on to do other things and became hugely popular in the entertainment world. Such as Melissa Rycroft for instance who was a former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader who went on to make an appearance on the 13th season of the reality show "The Bachelor". She was chosen over Molly Malaney only to be jilted a short time later. She then went on to replace Nancy O'dell in "Dancing with the Stars" when O'dell became injured during practice.

Probably one of the most famous of the NFL cheerleaders is Teri Hatcher who got started as a cheerleader for the Forty-Niners and went on to great fame in shows such as "Desperate Housewives" and she also played Lois Lane in Lois & Clark among other things. There have in fact been a number of NFL Cheerleaders who went on to do other things including acting, news broadcasting and other professions.

So, as you can see, the myth that would indicate that cheerleaders are "bubbleheads" is not true as many go on to do other things as well. For those who may be interested in becoming a cheerleader, you should know that most cheerleaders make very little in the way of pay, however the position can be a stepping stone into other areas as noted above.

NFL Cheerleaders are not all about dancing and sexy costumes anymore, though that is still largely present. The cheerleading squads have now evolved into participating in activities that not only to help build on the public image of their sponsor team, but they also participate in many community events such as fund raising for various projects. They primarily represent the charity events sponsored by the NFL team they are associated with and make significant contributions of time and effort in raising funds for the needy in their local community.

The cheerleaders cheer at the team's home games but very rarely go on the road with them and instead spend the majority of the time the team is away practicing and participating in the aforementioned community events.
Being a cheerleader on any professional team takes a great deal of commitment and most of them require cheerleaders to have full-time jobs elsewhere. Other than that the only real requirements are that you be able to get to practice and of course you must be able to dance though no formal dance training is necessary.

All in all the cheerleading squads have grown from just cheering on the team to doing great things in the community and for the people of that community.

NFL Predictions 2008 - 2009

It's easy to pick the Giants, Cowboys, Patriots, or Colts. I am sure they won't all falter this year and some upcoming teams are ready to challenge. The NFL powerhouses are due for a fall. After all, the Giants had a second place division finish and made the predictable - unpredictable again. You have to love the chances of the Vikings, Saints, Bills, Browns, Jaguars, and Raiders. They will be the most improved teams who could challenge for it all.

2008 National Football Conference

NFC EAST

Dallas - Runs away from this division. Runs all the way to the Conference final. Romo falls for Vikings cheerleader who spikes Vikes Gatorade with Ex-Lax.

NY Giants - Sometimes everything falls into place. This year they will struggle to be a Wild Card and then it's all over for repeating.

Washington - Improved team, Enough to beat the Giants in the Wild Card game.

Philadelphia - Just don't have all the pieces in place.

NFC NORTH

Minnesota - Purple offensive monsters crush Dallas in the Conference final for a Super Bowl birth. Ex Lax makes them run faster.

Green Bay - Good all around strength but not good enough this year.

Detroit - How can a team go on and on without a quality quarterback?

Chicago - How can a team go on and on without a quality quarterback?

NFC SOUTH

New Orleans - Will be more consistent this year. Brees has a great year and defense picks it up a notch.

Carolina - Too much expectation and not consistent enough.

Tampa Bay - Boring. Boring. Boring.

Atlanta - Do they send the rejects here or are they created here?

NFC WEST

Seattle - Very well-rounded team. Could go all the way.

Arizona - Please change the name of the team to the Desert Rams.

St. Louis - Please change the name of the team to the Cardinals.

San Francisco - Please change the team.

2008 American Football Conference

AFC EAST

New England - Easy schedule poor training for playoffs. Bill Belichick is hung in effigy after Pats get bumped out by Jags.

Buffalo - Young defense gets monster-like. Will lose the Conference final to the Jags breaking the hearts of Buffalo fans again.

NY Jets - Not Brets fault but Farve gets carved with hapless Jets. Fans want everyone fired or executed.

Miami - The Tuna, the Dolphins, Ricky Williams. This is a very cheap version of a junior Cowboy team. Can somebody spell Q u a r t e r b a c k?

AFC NORTH

Cleveland - A year away from going all the way. They should watch old Browns black and white movies with Carlings Black Label commercials. Fake like they are hurt and kill guys like Jim Brown did.

Pittsburgh - Can look great - and then very average. Browns overtake them.

Cincinnati - Carson Palmer should demand a trade. Great talent on overrated team.

Baltimore - Locker room poison begins to flourish. Good team - no chemistry.

AFC SOUTH

Jacksonville - Defensive monsters go all the way to Conference Final.

Indianapolis - Not enough Marvin Harrison or Defense. Payton bring them back - next year.

Tennessee - Good team with ugly uniforms. Should watch old John Hadl Charger films. No passing - no playoffs.

Houston - Improved defense and team with very cool uniforms gets steadily better but not good enough yet.

AFC WEST

San Diego - Look for a little losing streak to start the finger pointing.

Oakland - Everyone will hate them. Except the Raider Nation. Now if they only had Lamonica.

Denver - Continues to dive. Jay Cutler would take Green Bay a long way but not this team.

Kansas City - Abner Haynes returns. These are not the Super Chiefs.

AFC - Jacksonville over Buffalo - as Bills miss controversial two point conversion to win it. Fans destroy Wilson stadium forcing the Bills to become the Toronto Maple Leafs.

NFC - Vikings over Cowboys - in a romp. Cowboys immediately trade Romo to the Dolphins for the Tuna. Jerry Jones gets face lift and now looks like Joan Rivers. Little Bum Phillips is elected coach of the year for putting up with more crap than any coach in history.

Super Bowl -Halftime show is Michael Phelps swimming 14 consecutive 200m swims across Tampa Stadium. Raiders Al Davis signs him as a tight end.

Tarvaris Jackson is injured as time winds down with the Jags up on the Vikes by 6. Gus Frerotte leads game ending drive as the Minnesota Vikings win the Super Bowl. Adrian Peterson gains 200 yds. with 3 TD's to become MVP.

Marketing Lessons from the Business of Football

People don't go to football games to watch football. Oh, a few people do, but not enough to come close to filling the stadium. To find out who the pure fans are, you'd have to do away with the video screens, the mascots, the cheerleaders, the halftime shows, any foods more exotic than hot dogs, soft drinks and peanuts, and then see who's left in the stands. Would you still buy a ticket?

Football is more than a game; it's also a business. The business of football has grown because the promise included with each ticket has grown to appeal to more than just the pure fans. Does your business cater solely to your pure fans? If so, you're sitting on a tremendous growth opportunity.

No One Wants Your Product

We forget that people don't really want our product; they want what they can do with our product. Take coffee as an example. If we focus on the coffee itself, it's easy to get caught up in the price per pound or per cup, and the qualities that make coffee taste good or bad. Yet when we think about what we can do with the coffee, those factors become almost insignificant.

The place where coffee is served (the coffee shop) becomes the backdrop for a social event with friends or business acquaintances; the price of the coffee becomes insignificant. Perhaps coffee is the warm, comforting friend that accompanies us on our journey into the new book we just picked up at a Barnes and Noble book store. Whenever we buy coffee or football tickets or your product or service, we are buying much more than what the label on the package indicates.

Get a Feel for the Game

Football organizations discovered long ago they can enjoy significant boosts in business by looking at all the ways to serve their customers during a football game. By expanding the core product -- the game on the field -- to appeal to a larger audience, their market grows beyond the pure fans to include their spouses, other family members and their friends. In the process, football organizations enjoy multiple up-sell opportunities while engendering customer loyalty that keeps fans coming back. You don't have to love football to love going to a football game.

While your product or service may not be as flashy and exciting as football, you can apply football's marketing lessons to improve your market share, revenues and profits. If you don't, you risk seeing your sales fall flat and watching business go to your competition. If companies can apply these marketing principles to a product as simple as coffee, you can win using these strategies, too.

Unfortunately, we may be too close to our product to successfully apply these principles. We likely know the features and benefits of our product inside and out, and understand all the things our customers can do with our product. What's more important is that we step back and work to understand how people feel while using our product. Find out the feelings your customers associate with using your product or service, and then think of ways to give them more of those feelings. Here are three ways you can do that.

1. Ain't I Social!

Many people use a product or service as an excuse to get together with other people. Football tickets, coffee shops, birthday cakes, bowling leagues - people may buy these products solely to enjoy the feelings they get when they're experiencing them with other people.

Think of ways to get people who share a common interest in your product or service to socialize around it. Consider:

*** Conferences

*** Online chat rooms

*** Reunions

*** Rallies

*** User groups

*** Advanced training sessions

*** Charitable work

Any event, really, can be the perfect excuse for your customers to gather and experience the great positive feelings that will generate customer loyalty and keep them coming back for more.

2. Make it Memorable

When customers have a good experience with your product, they'll want to repeat it so they can recreate those good feelings. Ideally our customers will talk about their experience with their friends and associates long after the experience is over. You can extend the power of this word of mouth effect. Help your customers remember their positive feelings long after the experience that created them is over.

Memories are heightened when emotions are involved. The stronger the emotions, the stronger the feelings, the longer and more powerfully we remember them. At football games we watch instant replays of key moments; the turning points and dazzling plays worth remembering. We buy programs that allow us to engage at a deeper level with the personal aspects of the players. Sometimes we're provided with heart-stopping opportunities to win prizes. Souvenirs allow us to take the football game home with us; we can relive the feelings we had at the game simply by looking at or holding our souvenir.

Get your customers emotionally involved so they'll long remember the positive experiences they have with your product or service.

*** Provide mementos.

*** Give them a chance to win something.

*** Deliver a nice surprise they don't expect.

*** Give them moments with industry celebrities.

*** Take pictures, especially of them, to give them vivid reminders of the great experience they had.

Do these things, and they'll do business with you over and over again.

3. Include the Fringe

Around your core customers -- the pure fans -- is a fringe of secondary customers you can easily access. These secondary customers may be spouses or friends of your core customers who are easily reached through viral marketing. Give thought as to how to provide for their social needs and create positive, memorable feelings that will encourage them to try you once and then come back again and again.

The football business has this figured out. The football lovers in a household have an easier time getting to games when their non-football-loving spouse is eager to go with them. That's why a football ticket provides so much more than the game these days. While marketing the game to pure fans is a simple endeavor, football becomes a much better business when the offer is expanded to include the social and emotional aspects that appeal to the secondary market. For example, the Super Bowl has become more of a party than a game. People plan for and look forward to the huge social event that engulfs this championship game. Millions watch the Super Bowl on TV, yet few watch it alone.

Get in touch with your market and work to understand who your secondary customers are. Coffee shops gladly sell tea and soft drinks so their "regulars" can easily bring along their non-coffee drinking friends. Expand your marketing to include these secondary customers and you can boost your sales revenues by 50% and more.

The Game of Change

Football as a game hasn't changed much over the decades. The proposal to permit challenge flags supported by video review was carefully debated by National Football League (NFL) officials before its adoption, all because the League knows this; never alienate your pure fans. They are the bedrock of your business. Keep delivering the solid, consistent product that keeps them coming back for more.

Don't focus on improving your product. Instead, focus on improving the product experience. Once you understand the positive feelings your customers experience by using your product or service, look for ways to extend that experience. Sure, cream and sugar go with coffee. But so does a soft chair and soothing music. So does a well-written book of fiction. So does a table surrounded by family or friends.

Football is a game and it is a business. Look at your business like a game. How does it feel to do business with you today? Make your business social. Make it memorable. Make your business the game your customers are eager to play.

Las Vegas Mayor: Pro Team in Southern Nevada a 'Guarantee'

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to attend a Monday Night Football game live in Las Vegas? What would the NBA or NHL playoff experience bring to 'Sin City'? Or how about an Opening Day MLB start in the desert?

I can tell you exactly what it would be like. The back of your game ticket would be a scratch-off lottery game for lap dances and convertibles. There would be brilliantly lit slot machines in the bathroom stalls. At halftime, an opposing fan would be lowered into a cage and fed to a pair of white Bengal tigers. The vendors would be seven-foot mutants from Eastern Europe and the cheerleaders would be South American vixens. There would be midgets and clowns and a giant money tree that one lucky fan would get to shake at each home game.

It would be beautiful.

Las Vegas and a professional sports team are a natural fit. There are few things as American as the cultish pride, monetary excess and choreographed violence involved in pro athletics in this country. It's in our blood. It's our birthright. And America's Playground is the only city in the country that could possibly match that sort of frenzy and bacchanalia stride-for-stride.

The population of Las Vegas has tripled over the course of the last 20 years to 1.8 million, and it remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Its economy pumps out a staggering $72 billion annually, with nearly 38 million tourists blowing through town each year and contributing their mortgage/retirement/child's college fund to that honey pot. If we assume three-fifths of all Las Vegas visitors are sports fans - a measurement the Founding Fathers would approve - that would yield a pool of roughly 24 million fans to draw from.

"I've said before that just like Dallas is America's Team, I truly think that a team in Las Vegas would be the World's Team," Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said. "We really have the type of cosmopolitan people out here that would embrace the hometown team."

Goodman is an outspoken, martini-swilling, showgirl-loving Philadelphia native and the ace in the hole for the city's bid for pro sports. He is disarmingly honest, and has the guile and zeal one would expect from an attorney who used to defend such ruthless mobsters as Meyer Lansky and Anthony Spilotro. Goodman is on record in support of canings and thumb amputations as punishment, and has shown up in public surrounded by Elvis impersonators. Would you bet against him?

Goodman has lobbied and prodded owners and commissioners in all major sports to relocate or expand to his orgiastic oasis. Vegas currently hosts major events in boxing, NASCAR, Arena Football, Triple-A baseball and tennis. Also, the city locked up a bid to host the 2007 NBA All-Star Game. They will be the first non-NBA city to do so.

With the recent financial difficulties of pro sports franchises in Florida, Portland, Seattle, San Diego and New Orleans, the number of potential suitors for Las Vegas seems to be at its pinnacle. Goodman said that discussions have been "real hot" with the NHL.

However, not everyone shares his optimism.

"I believe Las Vegas will not be seriously considered until someone steps up and builds a new arena to host a team," said Jay Kornegay, executive director of the sportsbook at the Las Vegas Hilton. "Right now it seems like Las Vegas is just being used as a pawn for some owners to strike deals around the country."

Sin City's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness when it comes to seducing a team into its hypnotic trance. The reason there isn't a team in Las Vegas already has little to do with being the 47th ranked television market, its lack of a state-of-the-art arena or its graveyard of defunct pro franchises since 1976. No, Las Vegas doesn't have a team today because it permits legalized gambling and is seen by some as a modern Sodom and Gomorrah.

It's true that gambling and hedonism are at the soul of Las Vegas. But that's what gives it such a unique relationship with Sports. Vegas is Switzerland with slot machines. The hometown loyalty is to the point spread and every precious edge that she provides. People there are fans of everyone and no one, with allegiance based on whoever provides the best opportunity for a payday. Sports fans in Las Vegas are mercenaries, bounty hunters and war profiteers. And it's unlikely that their attitude will ever change.

That is what strikes Fear into the rulers of the major sports. They are afraid of point-shaving or players consorting with criminal elements. They are scared of anything that could be viewed as a coNFLict of interest and their hard-line stance against gambling is done in an effort to preserve the integrity of the game. (That is, the integrity remaining after sham officiating, performance enhancing drugs and uneven distribution of wealth.)

Needless to say, this stance by owners and executives is the height of hypocrisy. Goodman stated that the NFL's public actions and outward opposition to gambling is "the most disingenuous reasoning" that he'd ever heard. He also believes there's already illegal gambling at live sporting events in most other sports.

"There's more bets taken during an NBA basketball game at Madison Square Garden then there is on that game here," Goodman said. "Think about it, you going to sit around watching 10 guys run up and down the court for two hours without some money going around? I didn't think so."

For my money, the owners and execs are the real criminals. They are vicious and vile, feasting on the flesh of children and old people. Just look at Al Davis. They loot the public treasury for a new stadium. They charge $8.50 for a beer. They claim their low-rent, second-rate organizations are perpetually "rebuilding". They draft emotionally unstable and intellectually shallow children, get them hopped up on Potential and mescaline and turn them loose on society. Then the players are cut loose after they become multiple felons.

It's inconceivable that owners and league executives can pass judgment on Las Vegas or legalized professional gambling on the basis of some moral authority. They have more blood on their hands than most, and since they wouldn't resist the urges of greed and temptation they don't expect anyone else to either.

"They don't realize the Nevada sports books and the league are on the same side," Kornegay said. "We both want 'true' games. If anyone gets hurt on a crooked game it's the sports books. This is why we have so many policies, regulations and procedures to make sure the games stay true."

"Someday they will realize that they need us a lot more than we need them," Goodman said of sports leagues.

The NHL and MLB have stated that if Las Vegas was awarded a franchise the casinos and books would have to agree not to take bets on the home team. This arrangement was a condition of hosting the NBA All-Star Game, and had been in place for UNLV and Nevada athletics until recently. The NBA has said that the books would have to agree not to take any action on any NBA games - period - before Las Vegas would be given its own team.

Over $2.5 billion was gambled through legal channels in Las Vegas in 2005. Nearly $400 million of that was on the NBA. Those are high stakes for casino owners and operators, especially since they form the backbone of the local economy but stand to gain little from the presence of a pro team. Also, what if Las Vegas were awarded an MLB team and it made the World Series, or if they got an NFL team and it played in the Super Bowl? There would be riots in the street and potentially billions of dollars lost.

Should Las Vegas have a pro sports team? Could it even handle one? We will see. But when asked what the odds of Las Vegas having a pro franchise by 2010 were, Goodman didn't hesitate: "It's a guarantee."

Hmm. A guarantee in Vegas? If you're willing to buy that, I'm willing to bet that you'll be welcome in Sin City anytime.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders

"America's Team", the Dallas Cowboys, of the National Football League, are a much-loved team. Not only are the Dallas Cowboys famous for their success on the field, they are also famous for the ladies who cheer them on, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Dressed in the team colours, blue and white, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders perform precision dance routines while cheering their team to victory. Fans watch in awe as the cheerleaders make it look effortless all the while maintaining a bright smile. Like the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are known the world over.

There have been cheerleaders on the sidelines of Dallas Cowboy games as long as the team has been around. In the beginning the cheerleaders were high school students who cheered on the success of their team all the way through to the 1971 Super Bowl Championship. The then general manager of the Dallas Cowboys recognized that professional football had become more than a sport - it was actually sports entertainment. The idea for a more professional form of cheerleaders was born. Accomplished dancers were sought to carry out the role as Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader tryouts were held. With the launch of the 1972-1973 season the world of cheerleading would change forever as the Dallas Cowboys introduced their new cheerleaders at Texas Stadium. The chants and cheers of the past were replaced with pirouettes, and jazz dancing. Beauty and athleticism were blended together and brought to the football field - a new wave in sports cheerleaders was launched. The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders launched the world of professional sports cheerleaders.

The success of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders grew each year, as did their demand for personal appearances. Soon they had their own director who would eventually launch them to worldwide fame. The fans at Texas Stadium loved their cheerleaders but it wasn't until they were seen on camera in 1976 at Super Bowl X that they caught the attention of an entire nation. The Dallas Cowboys became Super Bowl Champions during the 1977 season and at the same time the fame of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders was cemented forever. From that point on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders became a phenomenon off the football field as well as on. "America's Team" was cheered on by "America's Sweethearts". Young ladies dreamed of attending Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader tryouts and becoming a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader. Those who have no hope of ever making it to the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader tryouts can still live the dream by getting Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader memorabilia found at Dallas-Cowboys-apparel.com.

The appeal the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders beyond the football field became evident as their number of appearances grew. They had their own shampoo commercial and launched the start of the 1978 NFL season with a special entitled "The 36 Most Beautiful Girls in Texas". They have been the subject of and starred in two made for TV movies and have appeared in feature films as well. Their list of TV appearances is vast. Beyond the borders of the United States their fame and appeal is just as grand as they have traveled the world over to meet their fans. Indeed, the fame, appeal and demand for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders is so great that they have their own show group. They also spend countless hours lending their name and time to charities such as the United Way.

The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, "America's Sweethearts", are an idea born out of professional football. They have, however, moved far beyond the sidelines of Texas Stadium and the Dallas Cowboys to become a phenomenon in their own right.
