Basic Information on the Siberian Husky

The Siberian husky is a funny, loving and intelligent animal. This canine is medium to large in build and a burst of fun and energy. Many people choose to raise these dogs due to their beautiful eyes and coat, but later abandon and give them away due to their behaviour.

Siberian huskies are mischievous as well as loving. They were originally bred to be sled dogs, therefore their love for running is very apparent. If given a choice between eating food or running, you will find that the husky almost always chooses a good run.

Siberians can be easily trained, if you're able to hold their attention long enough. Highly intelligent and attention loving, Siberians don't like to be neglected. They also dislike being leashed as they prefer to have the ability to run around

Here is a list of advantages and disadvantages that you will want to consider before purchasing a Siberian.

Advantages

1. Siberians are not aggressive. They may scare away some people by their wolf like appearance, but a husky will be very friendly towards anyone that approaches him/her.
2. They are very playful, therefore making them great with children (especially children with a lot of energy.) You will find that either the husky will tire out the kids or they will fall asleep together.
3. Siberians are very intelligent. Be careful what you allow your husky to see. For example, huskies can very easily learn how to open doors with their mouths to escape.
4. Huskies do not consume a lot of food.
5. They prefer to howl rather than bark. Siberians often try to communicate with you through their very own 'howling' language. You will find that even when scolding the husky, he will often times talk back.

Disadvantages

1. Huskies are not protectors. Yes, they are great with the kids, however, they do not make great watch dogs.
2. Siberians love to run and you will find that if the door is left open or the fence unlocked, they will run out. They are not nicknamed 'the great escape artist' for nothing. If left outdoors in your backyard, huskies must be enclosed in at least a 6 feet tall fence with 3 feet of fence underground, otherwise they will be able to dig or jump their way out.
3. Siberians love to dig! And not just small holes, Sibes will dig holes up to 2-3 feet.
4. Very destructive when bored. No amount of discipline will curve his appetite to be mischievous. If left unattended in your home, you are more than likely to come home to a mess.
5. Sheds like none other! Huskies usually shed twice a year, but shed excessively when they do.
6. They adore attention and will demand it often.

Overall, a Siberian husky is a great pet to have. While huskies are gentle, they can play a little rough with children...their favorite technique is tackle. Female huskies are not as playful as males, but can be more protective in nature and just as equally destructive.
